BUPA PRACTICE RIDE THIS WEEKEND

Each year late in December, myself and a number of other keen BG riders do a practice run of all or part of the Tour Downunder Challenge course.
The BG Sunday Ride program identifies this weekend for the ride.
For those who are interested, we will meet as usual at Hindmarsh Square and ride to the course start at Modbury via Payneham Rd - Lower North East Rd - Awoonga Rd - Grand Junction Rd - Reservoir Rd To Tea Tree Plaza. Total distance about 18km.
The Tour Ride course that we will ride is as follows:
Golden Grove Rd - One Tree Hill Rd - Cross Hill Rd - Black Top Rd (One Tree Hill) - Cornishmans Hill Rd - Uley Rd - Gawler One Tree Hill Rd - One Tree Hill Kersbrook Rd (incl KOM) - Little South Para Rd (Kersbrook) - South Para Rd  to Williamstown (coffee & bakery) - Warren Rd to Birdwood - Torrens Valley Rd via Gumeracha - Gorge Rd - Home
Total Distance from Hindmarsh Sq to Home approx. 130km, but if keen we can add the easy loop to Mount Pleasant and back to Birdwood which will add 22km.
There is a number of short cuts if anyone chooses to opt out early, particularly by heading home from Kersbrook which would reduce the ride to 85km.
For those who plan to do the Tour ride and have not done much riding over 70-80km, I strongly suggest that you take advantage of this opportunity to get some long miles in your legs in a team environment. Last year we stayed together and rode as a group and always re-grouped at hilltops, so non-one was left to ride on their own or pushed at an 'unreasonable' rate.

TOUR OF BRIGHT 2012

Check out Tour of Bright Video Cameo @ 8mins with the Veneziano Boys.

This is the most beautiful part of the country to ride your bike, and offers many of the qualities I enjoyed in the French Alps and Pyrenees. A must do for any Australian cycling tragic. Don't underestimate these Mountains they are a hard place to ride a bike but also a rewarding place! As for racing there - Brutal!

Riding in the Tour of Bright in  a composite team of SA boys for the Team Veneziano Blefari I was a hired gun there for my ability to put a hole in the wind over flat and rolling terrain. I went to Bright with one goal, do what ever I could to get Karl Evans (usually rides for SASI in Nation Road Series - NRS) the best finish possible, that meant burring myself to deliver him to the mountain climbs, and disregarding any personal potential in the race, as low as that potential may have been, simply  finishing was the only ambition I was able to afford myself.

Read on for more on the tour and my experience! FS

PHOTOS OF MONDAY NIGHTS RACING

Here are some of my photos from monday night. Well Done to Henry for 3rd place and for sprinting in the drops this time, no photo evidence this time. I'm doing a photography course so needed some action shots, lots of good photos of other riders but this is the best of the Bastardi bunch, plus an Irish man. Great night of racing, pity it was the last race at Vic Park for the Season.

ACCESSORIES

I don't usually recommend the physical fighting method as a means of dispute resolution, but I can't help but think we'd get at least a minimum level of respect from taxi and ute drivers if we were all bearing arms.

HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS

Not that we have a dress code in our bunch (official BG kit is preferred though) but this is the best example of what not to do I can think of. Even if you are the world champion.  No one wants to see your Huey Lewis and the News. Seriously...... nobody wants to see them, just stop it.

New BG Kit

Looking forward to seeing everyone out on Sunday showing off their new kit.

A big thanks needs to go to Steve B, Frank, Andy W and Billsy for all their hard work.

The logo and design look sh*t hot. The process was extremely well organised. The final jersey and kit are all very professional.

Well done boys!!!

NEW LOGO HEADER ...Awesome

Who ever did & organised the new logo header graphic (think i know who/whom) - it is f#cking Awesome!! Can't wait to wrap my self in the new kit and smash it thru the hills with the boys - ladies always welcome! Missing the BG rides dont take my absence as a sign of not being keen, NCC need me though, so been putting in mad effort bring em up to speed with media and training rides. Cant wait to not race in a supers kit and smash round for BG pride in some races later in the season! Might even BG it up for Nationals!

And if i hear yall been slacking in my absence i'm going to seriously have to come and crack the whip! Amy's rides approaching boys get keen. Lot of talk about racing Crits, not much action, disappointing!

Less chit chat, more cadence! FS

NEW BG KIT

New kit is still available to order, but get in quick as orders close on Sunday 16th.

Gold star award goes to Gav in Brisbane for getting the first order in, even though he lives 2000km away from the rest of us.

We can also order from the full range of stuff, which means if you want socks, gloves, arm warmers etc you can go for it. I note that we already have orders for gloves, socks and arm warmers from some of you. There are no proofs for these, which we will have to now do after the orders close, but I'll make sure that they fit in with the look of the rest of the kit.

The instructions on ordering are here NEW KIT ORDERING INSTRUCTIONS

Thanks to those of you who have already ordered.

NEW KIT READY TO ORDER THIS WEDNESDAY!

All

Online orders for the New BG kit will open this Wednesday 29th August 2012.Orders will close midnight Sunday 16th September 2012. You will not be able to order a kit after this date till the next group order, could be next year!

If you are riding regularly with us, you will have probably already gotten an email with the log in and password details. If not, we can get you one, just let someone know on the Sunday ride.

By following these step by step instructions you should have no problems ordering and paying for your order online. Once you have setup your personal CS DIRECT order our system is much like an online shopping cart allowing you to selct items and pay for everything online.

  1. Go to www.champ-sys.com.au
  2. In the top left hand corner click on the ORANGE box – Design and Order Portal Login
  3. Click on the  green CS Direct  button.
  4. Enter LOGIN and PASSWORD provided by your team administrator and click SIGN IN
  5. Fill in your personal CS DIRECT details and click CREATE ACCOUNT
  6. You will be brought to your personal CS DIRECT page. Find the order you wish to place order and click ORDER NOW
  7. Use the interactive order form to order your items from the extensive range.

You’ll need to know what sizes you want, for each bit of kit. Regarding sizing’s – jerseys, club cut very similar to current kit sizing. I have an XL jersey in the current style and will be getting an XL Club Cut this time as they are nearly identical sizes. As discovered on fit night, race cut jerseys are for grey hounds only - ie VERY F...ING TIGHT! Bib sizing is fairly standard.

Harder Option - Instead of turning at Seacombe Road, head up Cement Hill past Majors Road and turn right at Penny Barr Road (first right after Majors) this will take you to a train stop where you can cross to catch up with the easy option

Hardest option - Turn left at Majors Road at the top of Cement Hill on to Black Road follow this until Murray's Hill Road (2nd left after the pedestrian lights at the bottom of the second big dipper) Follow to Blackwood and descend via Belair Road.

None of these routes are particularly long or hard, but they avoid the targa adelaide. Good luck to Brian if you are competing or navigating!

Frank has kindly filled out the basics of the calendar, and so I'll get off my butt and fill in some rides. feel free to suggest any routes by sending an email with a map to andrewwilson911@gmail.com, and I'll include them.

NEW KIT UPDATE

Here's the latest update on the new kit. Its an evolution of the last one based on a design direction from our last AGM. There are a few small changes underway - mostly to change the ChampSys logo colour on the jersey.

Stay tuned - sizing night and instructions on how to order are coming soon.

I've paid our deposit to get things moving (no idea yet how I get this back) and there will be online ordering direct through the manufacturer using an on-line portal which will be open for a few weeks (once we establish it).

When the portal closes, they make the gear (takes 8 weeks) and then it will be delivered in bulk to me for distribution.

Hope you guys like the kit as much as those of us that have helped design it do.

-Billsy

TOURMALET - BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!

Visibility Low!

These signs are evil. sign says next km averages 9% and there is 6 km's to summit.
Above the Clouds!
The difference a day makes! Epic view. This is the west side I climbed up.

One year after I was there and the tour satge is climbin it today so here is a little retrospective.

The most brilliant and horrific climb I have ever done. Actually breath tacking with the altitude having a significant effect on the air bags when you get to the top. On the second attempt I gave it a quick sprint in the final 300m to shake a young buck from Melbourne, man did that hurt!! If you are ever in the this area of France check out the valley to the west of Tourmalet, so beautiful with amazing scenery everywhere, waterfalls, rivers, cliffs, woodlands. you can mountain bike, ride road, kayak, white water raft,  rock climb, hike, fish it is awesome.

If you ever plan going there is a hotel in St Savin which is awesome. Little restaurant does you hot breakfast and 3 course dinner 50 Euros!! even can pack you a gourmet lunch for the road! The village of St savin is out of this world. neselled on an almost imposible slope in the hill side above the valley floor it is amazing!

To put the climb in context it takes 20+ minutes to descend at about 60km/h!! The poles they put on the side of the climb telling you how far to the top and the ave grade of the next kilometer sector suck!! So evil!

Loved the climb so much did it two days back to back. one in fog that you could not see a thing  and the next day the sun could not have been brighter! A hard climb, cause setting a tempo was difficult as the grade changes quite a bit. An hour and a half of climbing is a lot! FS

Next week we will head for the hills in time to start the Rapha Rising. A challenge to climb the equivalent of the Circle of Death. Get involved and challenge yourself. This is quite the task for the middle of winter, but achievable. You'll need to climb from the equivalent of Glenelg to Mt lofty in elevation 9 times in one week! Good Luck. FS

SUN RIDE 08.07.2012 - BEACH

Yep, after the quick hi-jack last week to celebrate the birth of the BG's, the new kit, and the tour de france, it will be third beach run in a row, given the recent weather, that's probably just as well.
Should be plenty of sun this week. However, expect a nice chilly run down to Outer Harbour to start the ride.

MEET HINDMARSH SQ 8AMSTART Outer Harbour - Henley + Glenelg - City, 70km

Normal Outer Harbour run to Henley but with additional loop down to Glenelg Marina and back to Henley (+10km) Coffee @ Evida. Remember hold your line through the roundabouts

Sprint points:Outer harbour round about - Light pole before round about (regather)

Trimmer Parade - Bus Stop 31 before Intersection (regather)

KOM - Mt Patawalonga round about

Henley Esplanade - to the pub (henley beach rd intersection)

I'm currently going stir crazy with the flu, and beginning to think that the chances of me ever actually getting back to some level of fitness on the bike are a far fetched dream, still at least I am seeing more of the tour de france than normal. If you hear any news reports about a man who has hacked of his left leg above his knee, and is completing repeats up cement hill, just smile and know that it is me working my way back to beat Brian.

BG NEW KIT

Mock up of Kit and Logos designed by Steve B with DB, AW & FS

Bastardi – This refers to us being a mix of old and young, A grade and recreational, shaved and hairy beasts, fair weather fairies and die hards.

Gruppetto – Italian same definition as the French term, Autobus. Name for a group of riders helping each other to finish the stage after they are dropped from the peloton to make the time cut off. Also known as the laughing Group.

When combined - It encapsulates that we help each other to achieve our cycling ambitions, but not always! Sometimes we attack each other - ‘Bastardi!’.

The kit will be available as soon as possible, DB is organising a package and pricing which we will forward round soon. FS

Boyd Cycling Vitesse

Since raving about these wheels for a couple of weeks I have received a few questions about what I think of them and subsequently where to get them so I figure a blog post is in order.

They are the  Boyd Cycling Vitesses. I found these wheels online after reading in some random conversations on various cycling sights that they may represent better value than another low volume wheel builder SOUL (SOUL being good light wheels but where running a standard 20mm width and cheaper spokes and hubs.)

The Vitesses have been around for a while but the latest incarnation runs a 22mm rim with a 28mm depth this supposedly makes the wheels slightly more aero due to a better tire/rim interface. This change in the cross-section of the tire is supposed to lead to improved handling and more comfort (at the right tire pressure.)  There are a number of other wheelsets being offered on Boyd's sight from slightly heavier clincher wheels good for everyday training to super light weight tubs to 88mm!!! time trial smashers. the Vitesse though is the only wheel at this stage in the line up running the new wider rim and so far in my experience makes an excellent compromise between a race ready wheelset  and a set that will handle everyday abuse (read the reviews).

All of Boys wheels run Saipim CXray spokes and quality steel bearings. There is also a crash replacement policy if you destroy your wheels in ANY sort of accident you can ship them back and have them rebuilt for $100+$2 per spoke that needs to be replaced (more for carbon rims)

Ps Boys offers all his wheels in a stronger build option. For a few more dollars and a slight weight penalty you jump to a 24-28 spoke option that will stand up to heavier riders, crappier roads and 2000 watt sprinters alike.
