Brian's Annual TDU Challenge Practice ride

It's that time of year and with the TDU fast approaching Brian's annual practice ride is with us.

The TDU route for this year is more uphill than down and its journey along some high traffic corridors down south  and its termination at Mt Barker makes it a difficult to plan a reconnaissance ride.  However Brian has been poring over the maps like Napoleon about to invade Russia and has come up with a workable route.  I wont be able to make it due to family commitments but it looks like a nice day 29 degrees and light winds.
I am convinced I am the one who jinxes the weather on these rides, every time I go it buckets.

Meet in the city at 7:30 am. If you don't want to do the long ride rock up in the City and an alternate route will be decided from there.

Aldo,
I have reviewed the course for the Bupa Challenge Practice ride.

I suggest that we follow this route:

City to the Southern Bike Way
Hindmarsh Sq - Anzac Highway - left to Brighton Rd (Bupa start)
Left to Diagonal Rd - Left to Sturt Rd - Right to Marion Rd
and then onto Bikeway on Main South Rd intersection

Bikeway to Aldinga
Exit the  Bikeway and left to River Rd - right to Patapinda Rd (Old Noarlunga) - onto Seaford Rd - left to Commercial Rd (I thought it would be better to stay off of Main South Rd as much as possible)  Onto Old Coach Rd - STOP at Aldinga Bakery

Aldinga to Meadows via Pages Flat
Right to Main South Rd - left to Pages Flat Rd - (this is where we divert from Bupa Course)
left to top of Willunga Hill (approx 77km to here) - right to Brookman Rd - right to Dashwood Gully Rd - STOP at Meadows Bakery

Meadows to Home
Right to Battunga Rd (Meadows) - right to Meadows Rd (Echunga) - left to Strathalbyn Rd - left to Aldgate Valley Rd (Mylor) - Aldgate - Stirling - Crafers (via Pomona Rd and Old Mt Barker Rd past the monument) - Home.

Total distance is approx 135 to 140km

Brian

Sundays Ride - Daylight Savings

Sundays Ride is beach ride Number 2 - Hallett Cove

Meeting time is 8:00 am in the City

The reason its in Large Font Bold is that Sunday is also the start of daylight savings, increasing distance and midweek rides.

As per long established Bastardi tradition we don't shift to summer riding time until the Sunday a week after daylight savings starts. This means you only miss 60 minutes sleep on Sunday not 90 minutes. That gives us the right to be Bastardi  's the rest of the year.

Kudos to those who braved the  70 kph winds to ride last Sunday.

Speaking of Big rides. The very Best of Bastardi luck to:
Michael Richardson doing Amy's Gran Fondo on Sunday
Greg Vincent doing the Canberra to Sydney ride for Lymphoma, starting today and ending Sunday.

The sponsorship link for Greg was in email Billsy sent out Wednesday.  I am sure they will both ride the challenging routes in true Bastardi style taking all the sprint points.

Sunday Ride - Hill Ride Number 2 Cudlee Creek - August 24th

The ride for this week is Hills ride number 2 Cudlee Creek and it looks like yet another fantastic Sunday for riding.

Here is a photo for those who haven't been out for so long and are struggling to remember what the Coffee stop looks like.

Usual meeting times

  • 8:00 AM in the City
  • 8:30 AM at the Tower Hotel

Disappointing numbers again for last week so lets make an effort to dust of the cobwebs and get out.  This is always one of the most popular rides so there should be a big turnout.

Sunday Ride - Beach Hallett Cove - 17th of August

Sundays Ride is Hallett Cove - Beach Ride #2

Usual Meeting Time 8:00 am in the city.

Numbers were down last week again and a couple of wheel mechanicals made it a tough day all-round. This week has small hills for those looking to ease back into the vertical metres so I expect to see a turn out in the teens again.

I think we should get some of these for the Bastardi shop. Those Tramps are a real nuisance.

Cycling ads, late 1890s

As per the requests I have enabled moderated comments on the Blog. I won't be able to look at them every day so as long as people are happy to wait a couple of days for a post to appear we will give it a trial run.

Hills Ride Sunday the 10th - Hahndorf

The call to bike succeeded and we had a great turnout last Sunday, lets keep it up. It was a another great day for riding.

This week is a hills ride and in renegotiation of the feedback we have made some minor changes to the normal arrangements. Please read below.

The ride is Hahndorf
             a. Easy – Old Freeway/Aldgate Valley/River Road & return
             b. Hard – Old Freeway/Piccadilly/Greenhill/Balhannah/ return via german town hill

Meeting time at the City is 8:00 am.
Brian will lead the city group.

Meeting Time at the Tollgate is 8:30.
I will be at the bollards by no later than 8:15 am. Brian will text me that the city group has left.

There will be no meeting time at the Bollards.

Hence if there is a change of plans the group at the toll gate can wait for the city group to join up and we can go from there.

Lets make an Effort this Sunday

Gentlemen
With all due respect. The  Numbers for the Sunday rides have been bloody abysmal over the last couple of months with only 2 or 3 riders on some weekends. The weather has been cold but  the sun was shining with light winds. In short great riding weather as testified by lots of other groups on the road.

Lets all make the effort and get out this Sunday; our club is only sustained by participation and the Sunday rides are the regular event around which our group is based.

We can have a chat over coffee and decide if we should make any changes over winter to keep the numbers up.

This Sunday is the Venerable beach ride number 1  for those that have forgotten (its been that long)

Outer Harbour via Port Road – usual sprint points, option to Glenelg and back. (coffee at Evida)

Meet 8 am in the city.

The weather forecast for  Sunday is 5-15 degrees Mostly sunny. Light winds.

So there are no excuses!!!

As the directeur sportif points out it's only 6 months to the TDU and 3 months to Amy's Ride. Given the lack of  numbers I suspect many of you are feeling (or looking) like the Michelin man at the moment.

TIME TO START YOUR SPRING TRAINING!
(if you leave it any longer and I might beat you up a hill and then where would you be)

For a little inspiration here is the map and profile for the TDU ride for this year. You will note the 1800 metres of climbing that includes Sellicks hill.
