Time to Harden Up! L'Étape Australia

For Discussion over Coffee.

The L'Étape Australia will be held on Saturday the 3rd of December 2016. It is held in conjunction with ASO and includes a climb up the Col de Kosciuszko.

http://letapeaustralia.com/

There are individual entries and team entries for more than 9 riders. Tobias has suggested this as a possible team training target for the BG to aim for as we come out of winter.  You would have to get a hell of a lot fitter than the for the TDU. Looking at Col de Beloka that means corkscrew repeats.

We will discuss over Coffee as well as how Michael's Gran Fondo organisation is going.

The full distance "Race" Profile. 2,727m of elevation gain.
There is a shorter "Ride" profile  1,700m of elevation gain which is less than the average TDU. It basically misses out Kosciuszko but keeps the nasty looking Col de Beloka.

Its a pity you don't come back down Kosciuszko as that looks like a hoot. The name of the start location sounds a lot like the instructions for getting a male Brazilian.

Given the type of ride it is this will required co-coordinating transport and accommodation for 9+ people, bikes and assorted paraphernalia.

BTW I have a Polish wife and this really bugs her for some reason. Mt Kosciuszko is pronounced as follows: Mount k-oh-CH-OO-s-k-oh

Sunday Ride - the road to Birdwood - pain is temporary

This Sundays ride was intended to get out of  our Hills comfort zone and maybe add a new ride to the list while still offering a standard Sunday Ride for time constrained and unfit

Meeting Times

  • 8:00 am in the City
  • 8:30 am at the tower

The object is to reach Birdwood by riding through the upper Gorge and then decide between a set of return Journeys.

This was conceived originally in Ride planning as a Epic plus Hills Traverse of 120km

The Ride will commence as a standard BG Cudlee creek visit to our favorite cafe. Hopefully getting there before the Harley's. I want to get a sound effect chip for my bike that sounds like a Harley starting but I digress.

Post Coffee the Birdwood Group will push on up the upper Gorge through Gumeracha to Birdwood. This should fall at around the 47km mark.

At this point the options are

  • Return down the Gorge 94 km
  • Return via Inglewood about the same
  • Return via Checker Hill and Inglewood - Brian Special stage
  • Return via Mt Torrens and then back to the city via Lenswood
  • The full traverse
There are lots of ways home so I am sure there will be a good discussion,

Sundays Ride is the Kat Killer Klassic

KKK - Kat Killer Klassic
Sunday 27th
Meet Hindmarsh Sq @ 8:00 am or the Tower Hotel Car park @ 8.30 am

KKK Lobethal loop - Norton's - Forest Range - Lenswood - Lobethal
Cudlee Creek - Gorge - ADL

Short cut : From Lenswood - Fox Creek (Coldstore Rd) - Cudlee Creek - Gorge - ADL. 69km
Long Cut : (need more training?) Gorge - Corkscrew Rd (Mad steep) - Montacute Rd - Adelaide

Cudlee Creek cafe for coffee.

The Kat Killer Klassic honors the anniversary of one cats tragic death and Dave’s spectacular fall. For those not in the know early 2009 David C, an original BG and mad cyclist took a bad fall when his paths crossed with a suicidal kitty that resulted in the cat ending up in Dave’s front wheel and subsequently jamming into his fork effectively stopping his front wheel ‘dead’ and ejecting him into the bitumen. The cat survived the ordeal but passed later that night.

The BG can’t thank the owner of the cat enough for her assistance with an unconscious David and we respectfully hope the cats death was not to traumatic – R.I.P.P.

This Video May give you and idea but in this one both Cat and Rider escaped injury

Photos from Track Work

A few of the BG headed down to the velodrome track work during the week. We are looking at trying for a  BG Track day during the colder months. The photos should wet the appetite for a bit of track work.

SUNDAY THE 3rd of MARCH is the NO EXCUSES BG Club Ride - Daylight Savings Change

SUNDAY THE 3rd of MARCH
IS THE NO EXCUSES  BG Club Ride

Numbers have been fantastic so let’s carry it on this month. Also, it’s the daylight savings change on Sunday. You get an extra hours sleep plus as BG Tradition dictates we also move to Winter start time of 8:00am. That’s 1.5 hours more sleep, so no excuses.

Meeting Time is 8:00am at the City.

The ride is City-Port Road-Outer Harbor-Henley-Glenelg-Esca for Coffee

Pub Crawl Fail
As of COB Wednesday I only had 6 confirmed for the Pub Crawl. As the booking fee is $400 and 6 BG isn’t enough to pedal the pub bike I have not booked the event. I will send it back to committee for discussion and we will try again later in the year.  I know 6 BG probably represents a 100% increase on the power they normally have to pedal the thing but it will be more fun with a full compliment.

We will  try to organize some group activities especially over the colder months to keep up the interest.
