Sunday Ride – TDU Recon – With a much shorter Escape Route

Sunday Ride – TDU Recon – With a much shorter Escape Route

Hi BG’s well hasn’t 2022 flown by. What a year, we have lost more Sundays to bad weather than any year since the clubs inception, Covid has smacked everyone and we can finally buy parts again. Anyway, it’s time for me to post the last ride of the year.

We did schedule a TDU recon but there was a bit of weather that weekend so here it is for the last ride of the year. Don’t be put off the standard Cudlee route is available as an escape.

 Meet 7:30 in the City

Meet: 8:00am at the Tower Hotel

Route: Nortons, The Ranges, Lobethal, Cudlee Creek

Coffee at Cudlee Creek

Quick Return: Home via the Gorge

TDU Recon Return: Gorge Rd, Tippett Rd, South Para Rd, Checkers Hill, Forreston Rd, Gorge Rd, Corkscrew Rd, Montecute Rd

Due to the way Christmas and New Years fall this is the last posted ride of the year. If we don’t see you on Sunday the BG’s wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – Weather Call

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – Weather Call

Hi all. Just when I thought it was over for the weather calls this Sunday throws up another one. From what I can see it looks like Sunday Morning will be okay.

Weather Call: 6:45am via WhatsApp

Meet: In the city in 7:30 am

Route: City. Port Rd, Outer Harbor, Glenelg

Coffee at Glenelg

Home via Anzac Hwy

I have signed up for the Tour de Cure with work. You think the BG with our rules and our pace line discipline are a bunch of bastardi’s.  The TdC riding procedures powerpoint runs to 23 pages and they wanted access to Strava to check up on me. I received a Skill level of 4 and a Fitness level of 3.5. :-(

Sunday Ride – BG XMAS Party - Lenswood/Fox Creek Loop – with Bailouts

Sunday Ride – BG XMAS Party - Lenswood/Fox Creek Loop – with Bailouts

A Very Bastardi Christmas to you all

This Sunday is the Christmas Show ride. I know there is a lot on this Sunday but there are not many Sundays left until Christmas. So, before we all go into a month of eating and drinking far too much here is the pre-emptive calorie burn.

Weather looks perfect for a change.

Like every Christmas we set the Full Monty for this ride and then sanity prevails. We will do the Norton’s, Lenswood, Cudlee Creek loop.

NO CITY MEET UP DUE TO THE RACE

Meet at the Tower Hotel at 8:00am

Route: Norton’s, Ashton, Basket Range, Forest Range, Lenswood, Fox Creek (downhill)

Cudlee Creek ETA 10:00am. A quick coffee at Cudlee Creek. We should depart Cudlee Creek no later than 10:30am

Back: Then back down the Gorge, Stradbroke Rd, Glen Stuart Rd and back to the Tower.

The Monty: If anyone is feeling frisky and wants to go up the Corkscrew and complete the Full Monty go for it.

Lunch: I have booked a large table under my name for 12pm. We are aiming to reach the Tower for Christmas Lunch by 11:45am.

If you are not riding, we would still like to see you all for a catch up.

Sunday Ride – Cudlee Creek – longer Hills loop Sunday 25/11

The weather looks GOOD! Yay for once no weather call. I just can’t seem to get them right. Helen reckons it like a golfer getting the yips.

The Velo Adelaide means road closures so there will be NO CITY MEETING this week. Anyone living east of the city will have trouble. It will be two hills rides in a row due to the Race.

This ride was originally set as a long hills loop. Taking feedback from the AGM we will take an easy route into the Hills with an escape route return possible from multiple points.

Meet: 8:00am at the Tower Hotel

Route:  Tower Hotel, Glen Stuart, Stradbroke, Gorge Rd, Cudlee Creek

Coffee: Cudlee Creek Café,

Easy Return: Home via Gorge Rd

The Set Route: Fox Creek, Swamp Rd, Balhannah, German Town Hill,  Old Mt Barker Rd, Freeway

Why Not: Same as above but detour to Hahndorf for a second coffee

Hills Rule: We regroup at the top of each climb and at turn-offs

Sunday Ride - Yet another weather call

Sunday Ride – Yet Another Weather Call

I think I have offended a Rain / Volcano god at some point. It looks like a rinse and repeat from last weekend. The weather call last Sunday was an easy one.  The current forecast for Sunday looks like we have a small window in terms or rain but the wind may be an issue.

So, for the gazzilionth time this year I will not set a ride for Sunday, it is a weather call. I will only set a flat as I suspect a hills ride will be unwise.

Weather Call: 6:45am

Meet: In the City at 7:30am

Flat Route: City, Port Rd, Bower Rd, Seaview, return Anzac

Coffee: Norwood, so that we are close to home.

I reckon with all the reading the tea leaves I have done this year for weather calls I should get job auditing the FTX crypto exchange.

Also I have published the ride guide for next year.

Sunday Ride Guide 22-23

Notes for 2022/23

To say 2022 was a chalange with the weather and numbers is an understatement.

So we have been a bit circumspect and kept the changes minimal and rider friendly.

  • Note XMAS day and New Year day fall on Sundays and are No Ride weeks
  • We have kept the sequencing of Rides roughly the same as last year
  • The Epics have been dropped and will only return on discussion
  • The changes are mainly due to the TDU being on in 2023. Hence we are trying to go uphill more in December and TDU seek included ride to watch the race.
  • For general rides during the year we have included more two cafe stops
  • We will try for a few more lunch rides as these seem popular

Sunday Ride Weather Call 13/11

 Sunday Ride – Weather Call

Hi BG’s. I just can’t win. I hate weather calls, but it looks like this Sunday is another one. Saturday’s forecast is poor to put it mildly but if I read the forecast for Sunday correctly there is a window on Sunday morning.

So, for the umpteenth time this year I will not set a ride for Sunday, but we will make it a weather call. We do need to go uphill at some stage so if the weather allows Sunday, we will do the rarely sighted short hills loop.

Weather Call: 6:45am

Meet: In the City at 7:30am

Flat Route: City, Port Rd, Bower Rd, Seaview, return Anzac or

Hills Route:  City, Lofty, Ashton, Montacute Rd, return to The Parade (The Alley-opp)

Coffee: Norwood for both options so that we are close to home.

For those doing the TDU they have published the road closure durations/sag wagon. It’s not hard at all but you will need to keep a wiggle on as they have posted times significantly quicker for the last rider. Roads will reopen either once last rider is through or the following time elapses.

6:00am start, 2:00 hours to Ashton, 3:00 to Lobethal, 4:00 to Birdwood, 5:15 to Williamstown, 6:45 to Checker Hill, 7:15 to Corkscrew, 8:15 to top of Corkscrew, 8:30 to finish.

Sunday Ride: No Excuses – Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy 7/11/22

Its the first Sunday of the Month so its a No Excuses ride

Sundays weather is Sunny 27 degrees and Light Winds. I am in a state of shock.

After all the wet days this year there is no excuses for not coming out for this one. You will need to find your sunscreen the night before.

Meet: In the City 7:30 am

Route: Anzac Hwy. Seaview Rd, Military Rd, Esplanade and Return

Coffee at Glenelg.

Rules are as per the last Flat ride, so don’t be shy if you are unfit.

I am in training for the TDU so I will most likely find a hill to go up afterwards.

Sunday ride - Weather Call

 Hi Bg’s

We had a good turnout for the social ride on Sunday given the weather was a bit ordinary.  This Sundays Weather forecast looks poor to say the least. As such I will not set a ride route just a time and a meeting place for this week.

Weather Call: 6:50am

Meet: 7:30 am in the City

Route: Chosen according to the weather. Hills if clear

I have been getting an unfortunate reputation for making the wrong weather call. Maybe I should do the opposite.

Sundays Ride - BG Original Social ride and the Rules.

 Hi BG’s

We had a great turn out for beers at the BG AGM but not for the ride. It was pointed out that the first time we held the beer/AGM it was 12 in Lycra and a couple of civvies. Let’s turn that around.

The main takeaways from the AGM are return to the BG core rules that Frank and Co started the group with and of course more beer.

I have dug through the blog archives and distilled the rules as they have been set over the years. The core rule is have fun.

Flat Rides

  1. Don’t be a Dick!
  2. Pace: We ride at a pace that keeps the group together. A road captain will set the pace and keep the group together.
  3. Communicate: We don’t have eyes in the back of ours heads and 10 sets are better than two, so some chatter please people.
  4. Road Captain and Sweeper: If we have enough people we will assign these roles.
  5. Traffic Lights:  If on the front keep the acceleration moderate.  We will Soft Pedal after these to collect stragglers.
  6. Roundabout: We cant eliminate the bungee cord effect. Be aware it happens and regroup after the roundabout
  7. On the Front: You are under no obligation do a long turn or be on the front at all. However try to be smooth and try not break the cohesion of the group as you roll off.
  8. On the Back: If you find yourself separated or you notice someone has been and we don’t have a sweeper. Yell FFS and let the group know.
  9. Pace Lines: These will be called by the Road Captain if the wind is an issue.
  10. Sprints and Coffee Stops: The above rules cease to have any effect 1km from a sprint point of coffee stop. Go for it. We regroup at the sprint point or coffee.
  11. Don’t be Dick!

I will publish the Hills rules for the next Hills ride

Sundays Ride - BG Original - Social

The weather has decided to throw its usual spanner at me. I hate making weather calls and from the current forecast its either going to be really nice or tossing it down. If the BOM can’t make up its mind what hope do I have.  Here is the ride, it is a slightly modified version of the BG Original:

Meet: in the City at 7:30am

Route: City, Anzac Hwy, Glenelg, Seaview Rd, Military Rd, Turn at Bower Rd, Return for Coffee at Glenelg

Home via Anzac Hwy or Henley Beach Rd to be decided at Coffee

Weather Call on WhatsApp at a 7am

Sunday Ride - Hahndorf via Freeway and BG Beers

Sunday Ride - Hahndorf via the Freeway

This Sundays Ride is Hahndorf via the Freeway. The weather looks great. Sunny, 21 degrees with light winds. Perfect for a ride and for beers afterwards at the Tower. We will see everyone out for a hills ride or failing that a beer.

Meetup: 7:30am in the City or 8:30am at the Bollards

Route: City, Glen Osmond Rd, Old Freeway, Bollards, Aldgate Valley Rd, Mylor, River Rd, Hahndorf

Coffee:  Otto's unless Dan attends

Return: To be discussed at Coffee. We will choose a route to make a timely arrival for beers

Beer and Lunch: I have booked a table in the Tower beer garden for 12pm under Aldo. The sports bar opens after 11:30am.

This Sunday is the Bay to Birdwood.  I know this as there will be a canary yellow Austin 7 named “Doris” leaking oil on my driveway Saturday night. We will avoid that side of the Hills.

BG Beers

Hi BG's. We had a chat on Sunday and have decided that as its Post COVID  we need to have a social catch up.

So next Sunday 16th October if you arent riding can you make an effort and plan to be at the Tower Hotel Magil sports bar 11:30am-12 for a beer and maybe a burger. The ride is Hahndorf plus a bit. I will post it on Friday.

Sunday Ride - Outer Harbor via Port Rd Club Ride

Sunday Ride - Outer Harbor via Port Rd Club Ride

This Sunday is the No Excuses Club Ride. Fine weather and light winds are forecast so get out of bed and come for a ride. It’s good for you.

Route: Port Rd, Outer Harbor, Glenelg

Meet: City 7:30am

Coffee at Glenelg

Last weekend was a great ride in the hills only marred by me failing to predict the end point of my brake pads. It sounded like a banshee with a fork stuck in it.

I have done a rough cut of the Spring/Summer/Winter ride guide and have a few things to discuss with the group prior to locking the rides in.  See you Sunday.

Sunday Ride - Pain Lives Here - Take 2

Sunday Ride - Pain Lives Here - Take 2

Hopefully everyone is enjoying a second  long weekend in row, I certainly am. After my weather call stuff up last week lets try the Ranges ride again this Sunday. Sunday is a combination of long weekend and daylight savings starting so a short one in the hills sound about right again, The weather looks good but as it’s the BOM l will do a weather call in the morning.

REMEMBER IT’S DAYLIGHT SAVINGS

Meet: in the City at 7:30am or 8:00am at the Tower Hotel car park

Weather call at 6:50am

Coffee at Uraidla

The worlds champs are were great to watch on the couch. Hopefully Michael or Phil will make an appearance and give us the live race report.

I am on the MTB to Lofty on Saturday so Sunday is going to hurt me. Anyone who is feeling unfit post winter its a good opportunity to come out. You wont be last. Trust me on that.

Work has calmed down to just being hectic so I should be able to get a ride guide out soon.

Sunday Ride - Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy plus TDU Stages Released

Sunday Ride - Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy plus TDU Stages Released

This Sundays Ride is Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy. The weather for this Sunday is frosty cold with light winds. Hopefully numbers should pick up as people start to come out of Covid lockdown. We had a Michael R visitation last week as he stalked us from the comfort of his heated car seat. Hope to see him out on the bike soon.

Meet: 8:00 am in the City

Weather call: 7:15am

Route: Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy

Coffee: Glenelg

Tour Down Under Routes Released

The routes for Stuart O'Grady's first TDU have been released. https://tourdownunder.com.au/

From a BG point of view, I make the following observations

1) Looks like a cracking week with excellent routes for viewing on or off the bike. Especially the final Sunday which is a loop around Mt Lofty. It really lends itself to a BG ride around and watch day.

2) A Prologue TT on road bikes around the Torrens to kick off

3) We also have a good opportunity for a pilgrimage to Willunga but no Willunga Hill climb which threw me

4) If Friday Unley to Campbelltown is the Challenge Tour day it’s going to hurt. I score it Nasty++ or a 9.2 on the Brian Virgo Scale. It has Pain Lives Here (Ranges) to start then Checkers Hill at 83 km and then Corkscrew at 111km

Sunday Ride - No Excuses Club Ride

Sunday Ride - No Excuses Club Ride

Sunday Ride – Hallett Cove - Weather Call

Sunday Ride – Hallett Cove - Weather Call

Tuesday was the winter solstice so from this Sunday the riding days get longer.

The weather forecast for Sunday does not look the best. However, the BOM predicted a lot of rain for today and it didn’t do much. So  Sunday morning I will make a weather call via WhatsApp.

Route: Hallett Cove via Anzac Hwy and Glenelg, Coffee at Glenelg

Weather Call: 7:10 am

Meet in the City: 8:00 am

I realise the beach route for this ride is due to chaos that was spaghetti junction at Darlington. We will have to do a recce team to have a look to see if Seacombe Rd is a sane choice again.

Le Tour starts next week. Maybe a Slovakian will win. Current odds.

  • TADEJ POGAÄŚAR – 4/5
  • PRIMOĹ˝ ROGLIÄŚ – 17/4
  • GERAINT THOMAS – 28/1
  • DANIEL MARTĂŤNEZ – 20/1
  • JONAS VINGEGAARD – 9/2
  • ALEKSANDR VLASOV – 66/1

Sunday Ride - Outer Harbor via Anzac hwy

Sundays Ride is Outer Harbor via Anzac highway.

It looks like a good weather forecast at the moment with cloud and reasonably light winds.

Meet in the City at 8:00 am

Weather Call on Whatsapp at 7:15 am

Route: Anzac Hwy, Glenelg, Outer Harbour, Return to Glenelg for Coffee

I am now getting ready to schedule the next Ride Guide as the last time I just whacked in an extention for this Winter as COVID was still in the picture. So if you can start thinking about what you might like to see in 2022/23 ride fixtures and let me know any rides you want included.

I won't issue the guide until I can see what the TDU and the Janurary season has in store. With the way dates are falling scheduling rides through to winter 2023 looks like a real pain this time around. So I have drafted in a 2018 Henschke Shriaz and Bowmore 12 year old Single Malt to assist me getting it done on a rainy day.

Sunday Ride - No Excuses Club Ride

Sunday Ride - No Excuses Club Ride

Sunday’s ride is the No Excuses Club ride. The weather looks okay via the BOM but still begs the question of what “20% chance of 0mm of rain” actually means. The winds look friendly, so I am taking it as "bring a jacket".

Meet: City at 8:00am

Weather Call: 7:15 am via Whats App

Route: City, Port Rd, Victoria Tce, Outer Harbor, Esplanade, Military Rd, Glenelg

Coffee: at Glenelg

We can discuss the BG Super Mega Epic to Clare once the bike track is done. I am on the lookout for a set of gravel wheels to sling under the Willier and a wine bottle cage.

Sunday Ride - Winter Schedule -Weather Call

Sunday Ride - Winter Schedule - Weather Call

This Sunday we swap over to the Winter Schedule, and it looks like this year the weather got the memo. The weather forecast for Sunday looks a tad unfriendly for anything other than indoor activities. However, as it’s the BOM we are talking about I will apply the mark one eyeball to look out a window on Sunday morning and make a weather call.
The Winter schedule will alternate beach rides with close hills thrown in if the weather co-operates.

Route: Outer Harbor via Port Rd, Coffee at Glenelg
Weather Call: 7:10 am
Meet in the City: 8:00 am

No-excuses club ride is delayed until there is no obvious excuse.

To those with kids sport this weekend good luck.

Sundays Ride is the No Excuses Club Ride

Sunday is a No Excuses Club Ride.

The weather has been perfect for cycling in recent weeks and last week in the hils was fantastic. This week it looks like someone turned the switch winter. That said this Sunday looks great 19 degrees and light winds.

Meeting Time is 7:30 am in the City

The usual route Port Road, Outer Harbor, Glenelg.

I will issue a weather call at 6:45am just in case.

We do realise its Mother’s day and many of us will have to be back home early on Sunday. Hence, we have retained the 7:30am start for this week to allow for a ride, a sculled coffee and return well before midday. We may call the return at Bower Rd if the consensus is to shorten it.

Next week sunrise is after 7am so we will move to 8:00am starts.

Sundays Ride is Outer Harbor via Anzac highway. This will be a good one to burn off the hot cross buns and chocolate. The spring classics have been fun to watch so there is lots to discuss.

Meet in the City at 7:30am

Route: Anzac Hwy, Glenelg, Outer Harbour, Return to Glenelg for Coffee

For those wondering why its not hills this week (there is probably a whole one of you). Its due to there being 5 Sundays in May with two short weeks for Easter and Anzac day in April to kick it off. We also flip into the winter schedule in June. Trust me it works better this way. We are back in the Hills next week.

Sunday Ride is the No Excuses Club Ride

Sunday Ride is the No Excuses Club Ride

So as Sunday is a No Excuses Club Ride.  The weather has been perfect fo cycling or just about anything other than being in an office lately.  Sunday is  a Sunny 29 degrees and Light-ish winds so no excuses about the weather this week.

Meeting Time is 7:30 am in the City

The usual route Port Road, Outer Harbor, Glenelg. Its good weather so No Excuses.

I found out recently that at the ANU where Jacob resides he doesn’t have access to an outdoor tap and hose to clean his MTB. His first solution was to take his bike into one of the common shower cubicles with him!

He recently told his dad that he has found an alternative solution. He now rides it into one of the water feature fountains on campus. Naturally his bikes live in his room rather than the secure bike shed. I Love the ingenuity. I reckon if he did that at Flinders Uni where I went the bike would disolve.

Nina Update

Nina is recovering and her face no longer looks like a Pizza but as suspected she has a fracture to contend with. Get Well soon Nina.

Other News

The spring classics have started with GENT - WEVELGEM  this weekend.

I know that this pushes the new editorial guidelines to the limit however one of my Canberra mates sent me the GPX map of the Mt Stromlo Criterium track.  I thought that given the number of property professionals in the group I would share. Makes you wonder what they were drinking in the planner's office on that Friday afternoon and also what have they called the Strava segments.

Sunday Ride - Hahndorf and Women Down

Sunday Ride - Hahndorf and Women Down

Women Down

We had some bad news with Nina having a front tyre blowout as she was descending the steep hairpin on Woods Hill Rd on a Tuesday morning ride. The result was that she hit the bitumen at speed resulting in 6 stiches above her eye, concussion, and lost skin. We are waiting to hear if she has a fracture, so fingers crossed it’s okay.  Best wishes from all the BG Nina we hope you get well soon.

Meet: 7:30 am in the City

Route: Anzac Hwy, Seaview Rd, Esplanande, Outer Harbor and Return

Coffee at Glenelg

This Sunday was scheduled as Anything Can Happen, what did happen was ex tropical cyclone Tiffany. Apart from being an oddly sweet name for a ferocious and terrible storm it has meant Sundays weather forecast has flip flopped between great riding weather and wet season in Darwin. I have set a basic beach ride.

Anyone up for a Ride down to Williunga Hill next Saturday via Sea to Vines or Hills back roads.
