Sunday's ride is the BG Christmas Lunch Ride

Sunday's ride is the BG Christmas Lunch Ride

A Very Bastardi Christmas to you all

This Sunday is the Christmas Show ride. It will be the Light Hills ride known as the Full Monty. Okay, well that's a bit much prior to a few beers, so we will do this one instead:

Meet in the City at 7:30am and the Tower at 8:00am

Route: Nortons, Ashton, Basket Range, Forest Range, Lenswood, Fox Creek (downhill)

Cudlee Creek ETA 10:00am. A quick coffee at Cudlee Creek time and service willing. We should depart no later than 10:30am

Back: Then back down  the Gorge, Stradbroke Rd, Glen Stuart Rd back to the Tower.

The Monty: If anyone is feeling frisky and wants to go up the Corkscrew and complete the Full Monty go for it.

Lunch: We are aiming to reach the Tower for Christmas Lunch by 11:45am. If you can’t ride or have developed an aversion to hills, we would still like to see you all for a catch up.

If you can give me a ping on Whatsapp so I have a rough idea of numbers. I will book a table.

See you all Sunday.

Sunday Ride - Reverse Cudlee Loop

Sundays Ride - Reverse Cudlee Loop

Sunday’s weather is Sunny, Light Winds and 24 degree's so perfect for a day out in the hills. From last sundays discussion there isn’t much appetite for a 100km Epic but there is an appetite for Rhubarb and Raspberry crumble. So, we will head back to Cudlee Creek this weekend but in the reverse direction.

Meet: City (Hindmarsh Square) at 7:30am or the Tower Hotel are 8:00am

Route: Norton Summit, Ashton, Basket Range, Forrest Range, Lenswood. Fox Creek, Cuddle Creak

73km return 1100m of Climbing

At least with Brian's knees playing up he won’t be doing his usual and suggesting we turn left at the bottom of Kangaroo creek.

Sunday Ride - Cudlee Creek

Sunday Ride - Cudlee Creek

Last Sunday was anything goes. We headed out to Bradbury were the vets had a race on. Warren and I were briefly convinced we had our racing legs back as we chased the Vets D Grade up the hill into Bradbury. All up a cracking day in the Hills. Thanks to Tobias for the route sugestion.

This week we head to the Hills again but a much more gentle amount of climbing as a we head up to Cudlee Creek and the best cake in town.  The out-back route is 75km and only 800m of Climbing so perfect if you havent been in the hills for a while.

Sundays Ride is "Anything Can Happen"

Sundays Ride is Anything Can Happen

Sunday Ride - BG Club Ride - Outer Harbor

Sunday Ride - BG Club Ride

Due to the long weekend Sunday was scheduled as "Anything Can Happen" which usually results in a long meandering route through the hills usually out to north or south to take advantage of the break. However the weather forecast for Sunday is  dodgy. Hence we will revert this one back to the BG Club ride to Outer Harbor.

Meet in the City at 7:30am

Route: Outer Harbor via Port Rd

As always when the weather report is like this we will make a weather call on WhatsApp at 6:45am Sunday.

Sunday Ride - Surf and Turf

Sunday Ride - Surf and Turf

This ride was originally planned as Turf and Surf but based on some requests last Sunday we have decided to reverse it. This is partly because I expect a few of you will have had a bit of a bacchanalian Saturday night watching the "evening" Grand Final. I certainly intend to. So out of respect for fitness levels and hangovers we will do the rarely used Surf and Turf.

Meet in the City at 7:30am

Surf Route: City, Anzac Hwy, Esplande, Military Rd, Turn at Bower Rd, Return to Glenelg (Original BG route)

Coffee at Glenelg

Turf Route: Anzac Hwy, Greenhill Rd, Hallett Rd, Penfolds Rd, Norton Summit, Descend

Second Coffee at Norwood

Nina and Warren are excused as they are at the Grand Final and will probably sleep in anyway.

Sunday Ride – Is last week’s cancelled Ride

We Return to 7:30am Starts and the Hills - Pain Lives Here

The scheduled hills ride is Pain-Lives-Here as it gives the less fit people a chance to stretch their legs on Nortons and then ride through to Ashton before snagging a table and a Pork Sausage roll at Uraidla while they wait for the Deviation Rd group (Hint).

Route: Pain lives Here (The Ranges). Return via Lofty

Times: 7:30 am in the City and 8:00 am at the Tower Hotel carpark

Coffee: Uraidla and/or Norwood

Impromptu AGM

 All

We took the opportunity of the bad weather last Sunday to meet up for coffee and talk through the future of the club. The main topic is numbers for sunday rides.  As we ride for fitnes,  to socialise, catchup and destress and numbers are key to enjoyment. We have had some candid feedback from a few people on why they are not coming out so have decided on a few actions based on that feedback.

It's been pointed out that our group riding discipline has gone to hell in a handbasket. This is making it hard as people are spread out over the road and the enjoyment of riding in a group is lost. We did some number crunching and the average pace of beach rides has risen 2 kph in recent years, The average spped has slowly crept up for 26kph average in 2016 to a  28kph average). Hence we have decided to go back to the basics laid down by the BG founders.

Commitments and Ride Times: Sunday mornings were originally chosen as in those days it was quite on the roads and avoided kids sport. The world has moved on and that isn't the case anymore however any alternate slot has the same issues as Sunday mornings. So Sunday Mornings remain

Flat Ride Discipline: On flat rides the front riders will maintain a Median pace of 32 kph and adjust as appropriate for head/tail wind. This is fast enough everyone gets a workout and someone who in not so fit can still stay with the group without to much trouble as long as they keep their nose out of the wind. If numbers permit we will also put a sweeper at the back to keep the group together.

Hills Discipline: This is one we have fairly much stuck to but is reinforced. We stop at the top of every hill and collect the group. We make sure there are early exit options.

Mid Week Fitness: Sundays are social. Mid week is for training. Once we hit daylight savings we will organise a Wednesday evening training ride.

Pub Call: We are as much social as fitness so when the moons and stars align, we call PUB. The ride will end at a suitable beer garden and any non-riders for the day welcome for a catch-up and chin wag.

Lets just get out an ride.

Sunday Ride - Return to 7:30am Starts and the Hills - Pain Lives Here

 Happy Friday BG's

Sunday Ride - Return to 7:30am Starts and the Hills - Pain Lives Here

Here I sit in Shorts and a T-Shirt contemplating the weather forecast for Sunday and swooping Magpies.

On Sunday we return to 7:30am Starts and the Hills.

The scheduled first hills ride is Pain-Lives-Here as it gives the less fit people a chance to stretch their legs on Nortons and then ride through to Ashton before snagging a table and a Pork Sausage roll at Uraidla while they wait for the Deviation Rd group (Hint).

Route: Pain lives Here (The Ranges). Return via Lofty

Times: 7:30 am in the City and 8:00 am at the Tower Hotel carpark

Coffee: Uraidla and/or Norwood

I was waiting for the weather forecast before posting. I will post a weather call by 6:45am on Sunday on Whatsapp. We will shunt this ride to next week if its a no-go.

Sunday Ride Guide for 2021 /22

All

Here is the Ride Guide for 2021 /22

In general we have kept what works, tried to avoid the clangors and added some variety.

What's Changed and Notes

  • Trying to stick to Hills rides on the more quite roads
  • We have moved any club ride that clashes with a public holiday
  • The Two Coffee stop ride has proved popular so we have tried to include rides where this is an option
  • Christmas Day and New Years Day fall on Saturday's so we have scheduled no rides for the relevant Sundays
  • We have no dates or routes yet for the TDU so its a place holder for now
  • We have not scheduled any Epic 100km plus rides but we will discuss and see what numbers are interested and maybe do some other Routes
  • We have dropped the Kat Killer Klassic by popular consent
  • Heritage round is scheduled for a late February beach ride
Some Suggestions for Alternate Epics
There has been some suggestions for longer day out epics given sportifs are in short supply.
  • McLaren Vale via "Sea to Vines" trail. Those after a short ride can return to Glenelg at Hallett Cove. Brunch and a Glass of Wine somewhere in the Vale and return by the same trail. 120km, 800m of Climbing, 14% Alcohol. Partners can meet us in McLaren Vale. 2pm return to the city
  • Barossa - Hills Out and Northern Connector bike track back 140km, 1200m of Climbing. This would be a quick Lunch and return. Short ride would return from Cudlee Creek. Out and back on the Northern Connector would be shorter and quicker but also depressing. Partners can meet us in the Barossa. Late return to the city.

Sundays Ride - No Excuses Club Ride.

Sundays Ride - No Excuses Club Ride

Sundays Ride is the No Excuses Club ride and is the first ride of the post winter schedule. Looks like we will have a good day for it so No Excuses.

Meet in the City at 8:00am

Numbers have been really piss poor lately. If you intend to ride can you respond to the WhatsApp post. If you wont be riding can you respond and let us know why.

We want to keep the Club true to its origins. Accessible social rides across a range of abilities without a lot of obligations on members. Keeping a reasonable attendance is part of that.

Next week we revert to early starts and start going uphill again.

Also if you haven't seen Brown Bears strava art you are in for a treat.

Sundays Ride is Outer Harbor via Anzac Highway

Sundays Ride is Outer Harbor via Anzac Highway

Sunday Ride - Hallett Cove

Sorry about the late post. I was waiting to see what the weather might do given we got 46mm of rain on Thursday. I also had my Covid jab today that soaked up the afternoon. If your booked in for the Jab my advice is to get there a little bit early to do the paperwork and be prepared to hear every conspiracy theory when you tell people. Well hopefully my 5G reception will improve.

Anyway

Sunday Ride - Anything Can Happen - Beachy Hills

Sunday Ride - Anything Can Happen - Beachy Hills

This Sunday is the first ride of Winter as is the Anything Can Happen ride. As we have struggled for numbers with people having commitments we have kept this one with lots of variations and early exits available.

Beachy Hills is a Two Coffee and Cake stop ride. Hey, Its Winter we need the carbs.

Afternoon Rides and Numbers

After soliciting feedback about number there is support for an afternoon ride. The admin group hasn't had time to discuss this. Leave it with me.

I think we have agreement is that we are stuck in middle and as such don't completely suit either the fast guys who want a harder ride and suit those that are less fit and need a more moderate pace.  The issue is what we want to do, if anything, about it.

Friday, May 21, 2021

The Kat Killer Klassic honors the anniversary of one cats tragic death and Dave’s spectacular fall. For those not in the know early 2009 David C, an original BG and mad cyclist took a bad fall when his paths crossed with a suicidal kitty that resulted in the cat ending up in Dave’s front wheel and subsequently jamming into his fork effectively stopping his front wheel ‘dead’ and ejecting him into the bitumen. The cat survived the ordeal but passed later that night.

The BG can’t thank the owner of the cat enough for her assistance with an unconscious David and we respectfully hope the cats death was not to traumatic – R.I.P.P.

Sundays Ride is the Anzac Highway Beach ride

 Hi  BG's

A great turnout last week and a cracking pace up the gorge. This weeks ride is a beach ride, Outer Harbor via Anzac Highway.

Meet in the City at 7:30am

The forecast looks like a much more pleasant mid-20s.

This must be Hugh's' new bike as Strava had him out on the tyre reef about 2km out to sea on Monday.

It also had him at 100kph top speed down Kensington road so he is in form.

Happy Friday BG's. Enjoying Summer?. While todays weather is foul it looks to have cleared up by Sunday with 23 degrees and partly cloudy. This Sundays ride will be the BG Club Ride City-Outer Harbour via Port Rd and Coffee in Glenelg. Its a very flat ride, nothing worthy of being called a hill.

Meet in the city at 7:30 am.

Light Reading for Hugh

Did I remember to say that its flat, like a pancake. No hills involved.
