SUNDAY RIDE - NORTON TT + HILLS

Norton Summit TT
So the rendition boys had their crack last week, with Damien Howson beating Jack Bobridge's record in an awesome time of 11 minutes 29 seconds. Now its the BG's time to check how they have improved over the summer, and whether they should be challenging the rendition boys next year.

Good Luck
-AW

The ride course is as follows:

7:30am start at Hindmarsh Square opposite Hassell office - Rundle Road - Magill Road - Regroup @ Tower Hotel at 8am.

- Time Trial Start at the line on Norton Summit Road (just around the corner from Magill Road adj to the traffic island)

CATFORD CYCLING CLUB HILL CLIMB

2010 Catford Hill Climb Winner (15 years old!) via BRR

As we head in to the second of our time trials, I thought finding this was timely...AW

Blurb from the Catford website....
'The oldest continuing cycle race in the world'

This prestigious event goes back to 1886 and, with the exception of the war years, has been run ever since. Traditionally on the first Sunday in October. prior to the formation of the RTTC it was considered to be the ‘Championship of All England’ and still attracts the leading 'Hill-Climb' riders from all over the country.

The challenge is Yorks Hill (click for map) a 707yd climb with an average gradient of 12.5%, with two stretches of 25%. Needing an all-out lung bursting effort. The current record of 1min 47.6 was set by Phil Mason (San Fairy Ann CC) in 1983 and despite the inducement of a special prize has not been broken in 19 years!

This is not only a sporting spectacle viewed by hundreds but is also a social occasion providing an opportunity for an annual cyclist's 'get together'.

The Brighton Mitre Hill Climbs on Saturday, together with the Catford CC Hill Climb Classic on Sunday morning and the Bec CC Hill Climb on Sunday afternoon form the ‘4 Hills Competition’ with a prize for the best overall placing in the four events. This guarantees a good weekend's racing and makes it a worthwhile trip.

BTW there is a SA version on Willunga run by Kilkenny Cycling Club. FS

NORTON'S TT07

Times on the Day.
Great turn out for the TT Sunday with 18 out despite the light rain. Great to see the group strong with mix of new and old members. Thanks to all for turning out. I know allot of BG’s did PB’s, or went close, awesome considering it’s early in the season for most.

Some great times added to the board but ride of the day defiantly goes to the gentle giant, Mike Tilley.  Nearly going sub 20min in his first BGTT. His effort slotted him amongst BG's with what Billsy likes to call ‘mountain goat’ builds. MT producing an estimated 275w in the process, roughly 15-20% more than the BG’s surrounding him. Mike’s efforts, are evident every week, great to see him producing a decent time, but I know he’ll go faster, so look out at the end of summer!

Reports from both the groups on the rest of the ride were positive. In the PLH group we held together for allot of the climbing as well as the flat sections making it an excellent group ride! See full post for the full times board. FS

BG TT 06

Well it seems the faithful took the 'god' of TT's words to heart. I was impressed by the efforts of the morning - even proud of the bunches endeavour as we have come along way as a group of people committed to improving our health, enjoying our cycling and each others company. While we take our hobby way to seriously and revel in some healthy competition, we are still maintaining the intent behind the BG, of encouraging each other to get out and get fit.

Thanks to all who participated in the TT, it was a great ride and thanks for a punctual and organised start. It's great to see everyone improving and the bunch growing stronger. This takes those at the front holding back a little, also doing the hard yards as well as the those at the back giving it there all, digging in, and hang on. We all hurt together, some are just going faster then others, some better at hiding the pain, some better at dealing with pain, some better at accepting their limits.

Ride of the day easily goes to Andrew with a well deserved result in the TT as I know Wilson has been working hard on and off the bike and its great to see his efforts pay off. Well done mate.

Thanks all for your patience and investment of time into creating what is the BG. -FS

NORTONS TT 04 REPORT

ALDO'S ASSAULT

Norton TT 04 went down with some great times and PB’s posted. The “Fabian Cancellara Award” go too Aldo with a smoking time and MASSIVE improvement on the board, pushing down into the 22’s and looks as though he’ll surge even further down in a couple of weeks! Also Homburg topped me with a new fasted time edging me out by one second with both us riding it unassisted as I couldn’t reel in the 20sec handicap, with the burg even taking a second out of me! Congrats to all participants with improvements on the board all round. We’ll be looking to do another TT after C2C so keep the training up and hopefully we’ll see some more improvements across the board.

NORTONS TT 03 REPORT

Good effort by most to improve their times and if we gave out awards, one needs to go to Aldo who should be very proud of his efforts, taking three minutes off and moving down the board! The handicapping seems to be getting better with a field of 6 crossing the line at almost the same time, with another couple in the finishing straight. The jerseys came out a gem with the pack looking the part thanks to Warwick, Steve and Alf! Was great to see Adam back out on the bike after his spill early in the season! All the best to Geoff Stevens with his upcoming appointment with the knife. Again well done to all, with some good times on the board!

BASTARDI GRASSI TT01

Below are the times for the first Norton TT just gone on Sunday, the ride was a great success and thanks to all who participated with 12 turning out.

Your finish times are shown as; Actual times, highlighted in orange. At the next Nortons TT This will be your new handicapped time (Nominated time) ie. If you finished in 18:00 this is your new handicapped time! ie. i'm screwed!

Link to Cycle2Max data on Norton Summit

This will mean; The first to the top in the next Nortons TT02 will have made the most improvement!
If you didn't ride, no worries just get out and post a time up nortons and this can become your nominated time. The sooner you do this the better so that you can measure your improvment between now and the next TT.

For the following TT03 an average of your finishing times will become your handicap time, so as not to punish people for breaking a PB or just having a bad day! This also negates foxing your times.

This way conistancy and improvement are rewarded and gives every one motivation to improve their times and consistency - your really only riding against your self!

What we are trying to Achieve:
Motivate one another
Increase our fitness
Enjoy our cycling

The winner is every one who participates, enjoys cycling and gets fitter!

BG SUNDAY RIDE - NORTONS TT

Bastardi,

I propose that this Sunday be the first of our 'time trails' on a recognised and measurable course.

The idea is for all to time a run up Norton Summit (5.6km - 271m ascent) and log that as our personal 'base time' against which we will measure our improvement in subsequent 'time trail' rides.

The ride course is as follows:

8.00am start at Hindmarsh Square opposite Hassell office - Rundle Road - Magill Road - Regroup @ Tower Hotel -

- Time Trail Start at the line on Norton Summit Road (just around the corner from Magill Road adj to the traffic island)
- Time Trial Finish (driveway of first house on left after the 'cliff drop offs' which are also on the left, number 169)

- Regroup @ Norton Summit Hotel (record times) - back down Norton Summit Road - Magill Road - North Terrace - Port Road - Old Port Road - Bower Road - Military Road - Grange Road - Seaview Road - Henley Square (Coffee) - Henley Breach Road - Currie Street - Home

Total Distance - approximately 60km

This is a good combination ride comprising the follow key attributes:
- hard work up the hill to start
- long easy downhill back to the City as a group
- long flat group ride to Military Road
- usual Military Road push to sprint just before a relaxing coffee
- easy group ride back to the City and home.

Please remember to have a device that can measure your time (to the second only - not to the 1/1000th of a second!)

Any feedback would be welcome!

Regards

Brian Virgo
