Sunday Ride Report

HOT
Image result for hot weather cycling

Sunday looked like a hot one, so it was agreed to cut the ride a bit short. We had another good turnout of about 14 BG's including the very welcome return of Adam.

The trip down Port road was great and the pace gentlemanly. After the now traditional Port Adelaide flat we set off down Victoria parade. However as we approached the virtual kite the usual quick turn games commenced and Graham and I ended up briefly on the front. I tried to claim this as a lead out but as it was before the last corner I was out of luck. The first sprint was fiercely contested. Results as reported to me were
  1. Chris
  2. Brian
  3. Sam
The wind and heat weren't to bad at this point and the pace down the esplanade was pleasant. We turned onto military road when Sam taking advantage of the red light and the BG rule that triathletes are always useful, went at the lights diving over to the left hand lane segregated off for the triathlon. The Commisar's inquiry has ruled that everyone was near stationary so all fair. However that didn't mean that the chase wasn't on. The sprint group was well up the road pursued by another group including one the vegans riders at full yellow lentil power. Sam was telling us at Evida's how fast this guy was and how our guys were trying to hang onto him. At the back Graham, Phil, Geoff and Myself formed a chase group and working like a well oiled machine, tried to limit our losses.  Up front there was a bit of action due to the other group being in the mix. By some devious means that wasn't fully explained Brian snagged the victory. The results were

  1. Brian
  2. Andy
  3. Sam
  4. David
We stopped early at Evida's without looping down to Glenelg for a very welcome coffee and cool drinks. Brian called a return to Outer Harbor and the main group headed back by Anzac highway as it turned out.  Lets just say there was a a bit of confusion which ended up with Geoff and I having to chase down the Anzac Highway return group along Military road. We did regroup and were joined by the Vegan guy. When I asked him about the sprint and that I was told he was fast, he replied that the sprint was so fast he was having trouble hanging on to our guys and had found a good a wheel to keep him in the mix. A matter of perspective I think.

Sunday Ride - Hot

All

It looks like wind may finally be dropping for the Sunday ride but the heat will be with us like last week.

After asking around we will Start at the usual time to avoid confusion and aggravating hangovers but call a shorter route in the Morning to make sure we are all back before it really heats up.

Sunday Ride

This Sunday Ride is a Beach Ride. Meet 7:30 am at Hindmarsh Square.

This is what you get when you type "Bicycle Beer" in to Google

I typed "bicycle beer" into Google and got a selection of pedal powered pubs. Who knew this was a thing!   Henry should be able to knock one of these together out of bits.

Cyclo Sportif - Angle Vale, Sunday 1 March

All

Tobias asked me to post this. We have talked about entering a BG team in the Cycling SA Sportif series. The next one is hosted by Central Districts on the 1st of March at Angle Vale.

Is there any interest in putting a team together? If so we can discuss on Sunday.

The team size must be at least  2 and no more than 9.

Where do the BG's stand? On a quick back of the envelope calculation assuming I am the slowest rider the BG's at a normal Sunday pace would carry my sorry ass to the line safely top 5 on the short distance and lower mid table on the middle distance.

Whats Involved.

Who can ride in a Cyclo Sportif?

Riders of all ability can participate, as day licence permits are included in the entry fee for non-CA members. Otherwise, CA members must have a Silver/Ride, Junior (U15; U17 or U19), Masters or Elite Gold/Race Licence.

How does the Cyclo Sportif work?
The concept is very simple. Your team leaves from a designated start point together and you ride the distance nominated by your Team Manager (most events will have two or three distances to choose from).
The object of the event is for your team to ride and stay together;
  • If one of your team members has a mechanical then all the other team members should stay with that rider while they fix their problem.
  • If you have a ‘slower’ team member, then all team members should drop their speed back, so they all ride together.
  • Each rider assists the other rider in their team, eg, the strong riders protect the less experienced riders, but all team members have a role to play in getting to the finish line.
  • Each team will depart the start line at one minute intervals and be provided with an finishing time.
  • When your team crosses the finish line, your last rider's time is the one that is recorded. So the object is to stay together and work as a team.
These events are run with council & SAPol approval. Corners where traffic may need to be stopped are manned by accredited traffic marshals. Corners where teams need to be advised to turn are manned by corner marshals. Medical personnel are also in attendance during the event.

Sunday Ride Report

Here is this weeks Sunday Ride report. I have refrained from posting it earlier out of deference to the LOTW.

We had 15 out on Sunday and departed at 7:40 am with people pointing out  it wasn't time to go as Mike T hadn't arrived.  Right on cue he rounded the corner.

A warm BG welcome to Brayden, Tobias' son, who has been riding track and was coming along to get some road kilometers in his legs.

The pace  all the way down Port road and Victoria Road was remarkably steady. I did the first turn and can testify it was a long way to the back of the group. As we passed the reserve on Victoria road another group came past us, they must have really turned on the pace to catch us as they were shedding slower riders in the process. They rode straight past with a bit of attitude. You could see a few of the fast boys start twitching when that happened; you cant let that sort of behavior go unchallenged. Inevitably they started the chase.

The sudden increase in pace split the group into three despite there being a light tail wind at the time.

  • A breakaway with the interlopers who started the reaction by daring to pass, sorry I didn't see who was in it apart from Andy W
  • A chase group that  I estimate at 3 seconds back when they started chasing
  • The peleton another 3 or 4 seconds back.

It was 4 parts really as unfortunately Brayden, riding on junior gearing, had no chance and exited the group.

The Chase group was led by Brian and the peleton by Steve B who both completely buried themselves in the chase. Brian pushed hard and brought the chase group back to the breakaway. I think it was somewhere around Osborne. Back in the peleton there was the usual swearing and a  mad scramble as people grabbed the nearest wheel which wasn't easy as we were now dodging riders shed by the interlopers. Steve B picked a steady pace and the rest of us stopped grumbling and got to work which brought the peleton back intact not long before the first turn. It was Bastardi Gruppetto compacto but it wasn't to last. At the first turn the sprint was on. I took shelter behind Mike T and along with Graham and a few other was towed to the line. Many thanks Mike.

As reported the results of the First Sprint:
  1. Hugh
  2. Mo
  3. David H
The second sprint also had interlopers but a bit friendlier this time with some compliments for the group. I am not sure if David H wanted to pull off and no one came past to take over or if he intended it but this time it was him who buried himself with a "heroic" lead out. By "heroic" I mean "crazy brave".  The second sprint was a photo between Frank and Dan. I was told that Frank took it.

The group was a bit split up with David H waiting for Tobias and Brayden and a group including myself and Frank (taking it extremely easy) at the back. There was an unexpected benefit to being at the back when a young lady who everyone else would have missed emerged to cross the road. Approved by the BG's. Ah! the beach rides of summer.

By this time the wind had come up and the transit back from Glenelg was quick to say the least. At Evida's, Andy W suffering the effects of the night before bought a Corona on the hair of the dog theory. The ice broken there was a run on Liquid carbs.   After erm "coffee" most returned home via Henley beach with only Brian and myself returning via Anzac Highway. Hence there wasn't another sprint or climb to test the liquid carb theory. We should put that to a test another day.

A great day out

Sunday Ride Report

By request I am going to try to do a Sunday ride report when time permits.

Sunday wasn't the best weather but 13 Bastardi answered Frank's call a great turn out. There was a huge amount of catching up as we haven't had this many out in a long time. I will point out it was only and average turn out by the standards of the old days. However it was great to have an old style big group Bastardi ride.

There was only one glaring problem "no Frank".

Turns out he had a puncture and we caught up with him on Port Road. From then on it was a return to the old days. You know the fast boys pulling big turns on the front, lots of shelter from the wind and lots of talking.

We turned down Victoria road with a tail wind and apart from Greg losing his saddle bag (the one on his bike) we took a fast pace into the heavily contested first sprint.  I didn't note who won.

We turned into the wind and headed to Semaphore. Mercifully Brian refrained from ordering a pace line but the wind mandated quick turns.  We had just passed Semaphore road when Frank has another puncture. It was about 10 minutes before we got rolling again once Frank realised that neutral service wasn't arriving anytime soon.

The West Lakes sprint went  "very early" starting at the boulevard lights. Instead of regrouping at the servo an early coffee stop was called. On setting off again we discovered that the Glenelg triathlon had closed Military road by the Patawalonga.

Completely ignoring the directions of the guys in Hi-Vis the Director Sportif led a very confused group on a loop of the closed roads.

Three groups headed home Frank and crew along Anzac highway, other's went back to Outer harbor and the rest decided to avoid another slog into the wind and went back by Henley beach.

A great day out despite the wind. This week looks calmer so lets see if we can get an even bigger crew out.

ADDITIONAL JERSEY

We know that a few of you also dabble with MTB's and maybe even BMX's.

If that's your sort of thing, we've got a MTB/BMX style jersey this time that might interest you. Available in either 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve, with a mesh back for comfort.
