It was in early 2017 that I first started to bring my 13 y.o. son Jacob, out to ride with the BGs. In those first few rides he struggled to keep up and we had to take a few shortcuts but he was welcomed by all. Now, almost two years later he’s a vastly improved cyclist from a physical and technical perspective and the Sunday morning BGs ride has been an important part of his training in preparation for state and national junior cycling championships.
Recently he competed in the National Junior Road Cycling Championships in Bunbury, WA. I’m really proud of the way he prepared for the Championships and his efforts in the Road and Criterium races. He was little disappointed not to have stayed with the lead bunch in the road race but happy with his average speed and effort. (Note that his average heart rate in the road race was 193 b.p.m.).
Aside from the racing, Jacob has always enjoyed the BG ride experience. No matter the weather, he independently gets up at 6:00am each Sunday morning to get ready. Sometimes I think he’s in it just so that he can indulge in his love for chocolate, cream and cake at the morning coffee break but I know it’s more than that. It’s an opportunity for him to regularly share a common sporting interest with a great group of cyclists and friends. A big thank you to you all for your ongoing support and interest.
Regards
John
A Jacob update
For those that follow Strava you would have already seen that Jacob has had a stack (details unknown) and fractured his clavicle. The BG's wish him a speedy and full recovery.
Get well soon Jacob.
