Sunday Ride 13/12/24 – Hot Weather Policy

Sunday Ride 13/12/24 – Hot Weather Policy

As Sunday’s forecast is for 40 degrees on Sunday the BG hot weather policy is activated.

Sundays Forecast is 40 degrees, moderate winds and it will be warm overnight. Hence the ride is short and designed to get us home by 10am before the heat. We will decide on the road if it’s better to ice coffee at Henley / Glenelg or ride back to town and ice coffee or sparkling red (not that there is anything wrong with that) at Norwood

Meet: 7:00am in the City – Please Note the Early Start

Route: The Original. Anzac Hwy, Bower Rd, Henley Beach Road Return

Coffee To be decided by consensus.

Make sure you freeze your bottles.

A Very Bastardi Christmas to you all

This Sunday is the Christmas Show ride. It will be a Beach ride with optional hills.

Sunday Ride – TDU Reconnaissance 01.12.24

Sunday Ride – TDU Reconnaissance

This Sundays ride is the TDU Reconnaissance to give us a potential look at a few of the roads that will make up this year’s Epic TDU tour. The route here is provisional but the aim is to give an option to ride the Knotts Hill Rd either before or after coffee. Note: Coffee will be late on this ride so pack a snack.

Weather Call: 6:30am

Meet: At the Bollards at 8:30 am

Route: Bollards, Mt Barker Rd, Aldgate Valley Rd, Mylor, River Rd, turn Left and then right to Verdun, Onkaparinga Valley rd to Balhanna.

Option for early coffee at Balhanna.

Route: Balhanna, Greenhill rd, right onto Swamp rd, Swamp Rd to Lenswood, Lobethal Rd to Forrest Range Deviation Rd

At this point we either do Deviation Rd and have coffee at Uraidla or do the climb. If we do Uraidla it allows people to avoid the climb.

The Climb straight away.

Route: Right turn onto Hunters Rd, Knotts Hill rd Climb, Ashton and through to Uraidla for coffee.

Give people the option

Route: Deviation Rd, Uraidla, Coffee, Deviation Rd, Forrest range, Right turn onto Hunters Rd, Knotts Hill rd Climb, Ashton and through to Nortons.

This ride is used to be one Brian organised, I think we will have more chance of seeing him at the Christmas show.

Sunday Ride 24/11 – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – No Excuses Club ride

Sunday Ride 24/11 – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – No Excuses Club ride

As this Sunday is the last Sunday of the Month its early for a club ride however as the BG Christmas ride is soon let’s bring the No Excuses ride forward. The weather websites I look at are a bit contradictory about Sunday morning so we might get a nice dry window or require scuba tanks I am not sure. They all agree however that Saturday night will be wet hence it will be a weather call in the morning.

Weather Call: 6:30am

Meet: In the City, Hindmarsh square

Time: 7:30 am

Route: Outer Harbor via Port Rd. Esplanade, Military, Seaview Rd

Sunday Ride 17/11/24 Velo Adelaide - Hahndorf via Uraidla

It is Velo Adelaide 500 this weekend in case you didn’t notice the aerobatics overhead. So as is usual for this weekend starting in the city is not advisable. Hence, we will head for the hills on the much loved and rarely used Handorf - Reverse the Strudel ride.  As every weather forecast, I look at changes its mind about the arrival time of the cool change I will book a weather call just in case.

Weather Call: 6:30am

Ride for Jason - November 10th

 Ride for Jason

All, in memory of our friend and riding buddy Jason we are organising a Big Blue Table breakfast at the Largs Pier hotel on Sunday November the 10th after our Sunday Ride. As Jason had friends in multiple riding groups, we will be extending the invitation to everyone who knew him.

After a debate over which of the two pubs Jason loved,  we had a choice of Uraidla or Largs Pier. We have decided to stick to the flats unless circumstances intervene as this will make the ride accessible to all.

I would like to book next week so if you can please let me know if you intend to come along as that would be very helpful.

The big blue table donation page is under my name at

Sunday Ride 18/10 – This week ride is sheer bloody minded obstinance – Cudlee Creek or Bust

Sunday Ride 18/10 – This week ride is sheer bloody minded obstinance – Cudlee Creek or Bust

Last weekend the weather forecast was great for Cudlee Creek, but we got rained on Sunday Morning. The result was yet another impromptu beach ride. So, this is the Forth attempt to transition out of Winter with some gentle climbing and then some superior cake at Cudlee Creek. This time the forecast looks superb for cycling, Sunny 26 degrees and moderate winds. hence no weather call and we will start at the Tower.

Meet: Tower Hotel at 7:30am (NOTE: The daylight savings shift))

Route: Tower, Glen Stuart Rd, Morilata Rd, Stradbroke rd, Gorge Rd, Cudlee Creek

Coffee and Cake: Cuddle Creek

Sunday Ride 13/10 – Another attempt at Cudlee Creek

Sunday Ride 13/10 – Another attempt at Cudlee Creek

Last weekend we decided against Cudlee Creek as the radar was showing rain in the hills so we did the hills face

This is the Third attempt to transition out of Winter with some gentle climbing and then some superior cake at Cudlee Creek. This time the forecast looks good hence no weather call and we will start at the Tower.

Meet: Tower Hotel at 7:30am (NOTE: The daylight savings shift))

Route: Tower, Glen Stuart Rd, Morilata Rd, Stadbroke rd, Gorge Rd, Cudlee Creek

Coffee and Cake: Cuddle Creek

Easy Return: Out and back

Hard Return: Corkscrew Rd – Montacute Rd

Please Note: We have been informed by various of our little birds that Babette has now completed training the new owners and has departed the business. We have varying opinions on the impact a change on management has had on the quality and quantity of the cake as well as the speed of service. The BG’s Coffee and Cake committee will need to convene to discuss the outcome post ride.

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd 29/09 – Club Ride Grand Final edition

Meet: In the City, Hindmarsh square

Time: 7:30 am

Sunday Ride – The Ranges – Man Down

Sunday Ride – The Ranges – Man Down

I feel sombre posting the Sunday ride this week as we have a Man down that has saddened everyone.

So just the basics.

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd 15/09

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd

The weather looks good for Sunday, sunny 17 degrees, it will be a little breezy from the Southeast so we  will plan Port out and Anzac back and swap around depending on what the wind is doing.

The weather looks so nice in fact I am not scheduling a weather call.

Meet: In the City, Hindmarsh square

Time: 7:30 am

Route: Outer Harbor via Port Rd. Esplanade, Military, Seaview Rd

Coffee: At Glenelg

After encountering fog so thick we turned back out of the hills I made my second only attempt at the top of Kensington road last Sunday. So much for gentle hills that one hurt. That said it was a good introduction to the hills for this season. Made me think I should throw in a Lynton bike path or Sheoak Rd. To talk me out of it you need to come out on Sunday.

Sunday Ride 08/09 – Cudlee Creek

Sunday Ride 08/09 – Cudlee Creek

This is the second Sunday of Spring do its time to transition out of Winter with some gentle climbing and then some superior cake at Cudlee Creek. Unlike the last two weekends winds wont be Gale force but apart from that  I really don’t know what to make of Sunday’s forecast. Hence a weather call and we will start at the Tower regardless.

Weather Call: 6:30am

Meet: Tower Hotel at 7:30am (NOTE: The Early Start)

Route: Tower, Glen Stuart Rd, Morilata Rd, Stadbroke rd, Gorge Rd, Cudlee Creek

Sunday Ride – Fathers Day Ride - Port Rd to Semaphore and Anzac Return 01/09

Sunday Ride – Fathers Day Ride - Port Rd to Semaphore and Anzac Return

As this Sunday is a Fathers day  I have set a short beach ride to make sure that everyone is back and showered in time for lunch. The weather forecast is the usual unhelpful nonsense but there is a possibility of high winds which I think will be more a problem than rain.

Weather Call: 6:30 am

Meet: In the City, Hindmarsh square

Time: 7:30 am

Route: Outer Harbor via Port Rd.

Coffee: At Semaphore

Return chosen via the Wind but Military Rd and Anzac Hwy by default

Last weeks forecast was seriously wrong, and we had a great ride with the wind only coming up on the return trip. I did break my PB of 12 years on Port Rd. I have been flat chat so have paid no attention at all the Vuelta so you can fill me in.

Sunday Ride 25/08 - The Depths aka the original BG Ride

Sunday Ride 25/08 - The Depths aka the original BG Ride

I have consulted the BOM and the long-range hour by hour forecast and Sunday will either be okay or blowing hard. So, I have set the original BG Ride and we will use the mark 1 eyeball to make a weather call. If it’s raining or the winds are too high, we will call it. Note the early start, we have brought it forward as its now well and truly light by 7:30am

Weather Call: 6:30am

Meet: 7:30 am in the City

Route: Anzac Hwy, Military Rd, U-Turn at Bower Rd and return

Coffee at Skala Bakery or Semaphore

Return via Henly Beach Rd

I haven’t paid any attention to the Vuelta as I have been flat out this week. Ben O’Conner is leading after 6 stages. I think Pogacar decided to leave something on the table for the other guys. See you Sunday.

Sunday Ride 18/08 – Short Beach – Hallett Cove

Sunday Ride – Short Beach – Hallett Cove

Sunday looks like a break in the weather 17 degrees, Cloudy, Light Winds and fog. We will plan to do the short ride down to Hallett Cove we can call the route in the morning depending on the situation.

Weather Call: 7:00 am

Meet in the City at 8:00am

Route: City, ANZAC Hwy, Esplanade, Wheatland St, Kuri Parade, Brandon Tce, The Cove and Return

Coffee at Glenelg

Return via Anzac Hwy

Mr O’Grady has thrown us some club riding curve balls in this years TDU. He has obviously had the interstate clubs in mind. Up for discussion over caffeine and beer we are tentatively targeting:

Tuesday Stage 1: Prospect to Gumeracha – Kangaroo Creek, Lunch and Beer at Cudlee and the onto Gumeracha for the Finish

Thursday Stage 3: Norwood to Uraidla – Apart from watching the start on Norton Summit this one presents some leg breaking choices, or we book a table at the Uraidla pub and get stoned while we wait.

Saturday Stage 4: BG No Excuses pilgrimage to Willunga. The most extreme option is to watch them on Wickhams hill then ride across the range to Willunga hill.

Sunday Ride 11/08 – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – No Excuses Club ride

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – No Excuses Club ride

Time: 8:00 am

Route: Outer Harbor via Port Rd. Esplanade, Military, Seaview Rd

Coffee: At Glenelg

The Olympics are almost over so there should be more than enough to unpack. See you Sunday.

If the consensus is for Hills in the Morning we will ride a Montacute variation.

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy return via Port Rd (Reverse the Excuses) 04/08

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy return via Port Rd (Reverse the Excuses) 04/08

Coffee at Semaphore

Optionally out to Outer Harbor

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – No Excuses Club ride 28/07

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Port Rd – No Excuses Club ride

As this Sunday is the last Sunday of the Month its early for a club ride however as the weather looks good 14 degrees, Partly Cloudy and Light Winds lets bring the No Excuses ride forward. So, No Excuses, I expect to see everyone out.

The tour is over, but the Olympics have started so a bit to discuss. Its either that or we can carry on my work discussion from this week. If you replace the frame, is it still the old bike with a new frame or a new bike with old bits?

Friday, July 19, 2024

Sunday Ride 21/07 - The Depths aka the original BG Ride

Sunday Ride 21/07 - The Depths aka the original BG Ride

I have consulted the BOM and the long-range hour by hour forecast and realised that I as a weather forecaster I make a good IT guy. So for the third week in a row I have set the original BG Ride and we will use the mark 1 eyeball to make a weather call. If its raining or the winds are too high we will call it.

Weather Call: 7am

Meet: 8am in the City

Route: Anzac Hwy, Military Rd, U-Turn at Bower Rd and return

Coffee at Skala Bakery or Semaphore

Return via Henly Beach Rd

If it looks okay on the road Sunday, we can extend. Another week of good racing in the tour. I think Pogacar has it in the bag at this point.

Sunday Ride – Hallett Cove - With extention

Sunday Ride  – Hallett Cove - with extention

The weather for Sunday is currently forecast to be mostly sunny with light winds so no need to a a weather call. We also want to remind the legs that hills exist. Given its looks like a nice day and  Hugh’s least favourite ride is reckoned to be a bit short, we will tack on a bit. As Brian is most likely sparked out under an olive tree with a bottle of Restina in one hand and a Yiros in the other he is unlikely to join.

Meet in the City (Hindmarsh Square) at 8:00 am

Route: City, Unley Rd, Goodwood Rd, Spagetti Junction, Seacombe Rd, Wheatland St, Kuri Parade, Brandon Tce, The Cove and then back via the Espalande to Glenelg, Glenelg to West Beach

See you all out on Sunday

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Anzac Highway

Sunday Ride – Outer Harbor via Anzac Highway

This week is the beach ride down ANZAC highway and out to Outer Harbour. The run of great but frigid weather has officially ended this Sunday.  So, it will be a weather call this Sunday.

Time: 8:00 am

Route: Outer Harbor via Anzac Hwy. Seaview Rd, Esplanade, Military, Lady Gowrie and return

Coffee: Determined by legs and weather but Semaphore looks likely

We have had a lack of togetherness on the flat rides, so we strictly enforce the, “ride together”, “go as hard as you like” segments and regather points on this one.

When I say enforce, I mean I will be cross.

Sunday Ride 10/03/24 – Hot Weather Policy

Sunday Ride 10/03/24 – Hot Weather Policy

The BG’s have a hot weather policy. Yes, we do. It just hasn’t been needed for 4 years.

Coffee will either Glenelg or Norwood. To be decided by consensus.

Sunday Ride - Outer Harbour via Port Road

SUNDAY RIDE - Beach via Port Road

Hello BG lovelies...

With Aldo away in Perf satisfying he and Helen's 'interesting' penchant for wrestling, yours truly has taken over the communication channels for the week. Don't worry, I won't spend the whole time extolling the virtues of Titanium and Wahoo Elmnts.

The weather on Sunday is looking pretty good, with light winds and a predicted maximum temperature of 31 degrees. Sunrise will be at 6.59am. We'll be in the waning gibbous moon phase, with sun protection recommended from 9.40am until 5.20pm. In the words of Max Verstappen after winning yet another Grand Prix whilst managing not to fall asleep, it's looking 'very lovely'...

Anyway, the simple message is to be there.

Meet in the city at 7.30am for a ride to Glenelg via Port Road. Coffee at KOM, followed by a negotiated return. Maybe via Outer Harbour for those looking for their February Grand Fondo badge on Strava or maybe via ANZAC Highway for those still rediscovering their form (or on a promise).

Anyhoo, be there, it'll be grouse.

Sunday Ride – Hahndorf

 *Sunday Ride – Hahndorf*

I love the smell of strudel in the morning, it smells like cinnamon. This Sundays ride is Hahndorf.  River Road is now officially the heavy vehicle bypass. So, we will be riding the Strada Bianchi of Kangaroo Reef road.   Extra points will be awarded for sparkly knicks.

The earlier meeting time didn’t really work so we will revert to standard.

Meet: 7:30am is the city or 8:30 am at the Mt Lofty Bollards, that’s the top of the hill

Route: Old Mt Barker Rd, Mt Barker Rd, Aldgate Valley Rd, Mylor, Strathalbyn Rd, briefly on River Rd, Right on Kangaroo Reef rd, Hard right to stay on Kangaroo Reef Rd at Snelling Rd, Echunga Rd, Hahndorf

Coffee at Hahndorf, caffe to be selected but Otto’s by default

Return Route decided at Coffee!

I have seen lots of very fit cyclists on the bike track I am guessing they are here for the track championships.

TDU Weekend

Saturday Willunga Stage

It looks like most people are driving tomorrow so if we can message each other on whatsapp to arrange meetups. I have been mother-in-lawed so will be down later in the day. Given it’s 35 degrees plus this may be wise.

Sunday ride TDU viewing.

Here is the plan for Sunday. Our base is at Uraidla. The bowls club will not be doing a BBQ this year but we figure Uraidla pub/bakery will have something for lunch. The bowls club may still have beer.

Last year worked well so we will do the same with appropriate variations.

Timings are for Gentlemen and sore legs.

Meet: 7:30 am in the City

1. Glenelg via Henley Beach rd for coffee. Arrive by 8:15 am

2. Glenelg to Belair via Cross Rd. Arrive 9:45 am

3. Belair to Windy Point. Arrive 10:30 am

Alternate is meet us at the BP Station at top of hill at 10:30am

Find a spot to watch the Peloton on the Windy Point Climb. Big hairpin at the restaurant by default.

4. View TDU first time over Windy Point Estimated at 11:20am

5. Ride through to Uraidla for Lunch and Beer via National Park (not Saddlehill)

Peloton expected at 1:30pm and 2:10pm at Uraidla

This itinerary should provide 30-45 minutes slack to deal with traffic and exploding legs.

Carry some snacks with you.

See you Sunday.

Sunday Ride – Short Beach – Hallett Cove

The weather for Sunday is currently forecast to be a bit breezy later in the day. Given we have a solid week of riding ahead we will do the short ride down to Hallett Cove. It’s Hugh’s least favourite ride but it does offer the opportunity for Brian to join.

Meet in the City (Hindmarsh Square) at 7:30 am

Route: City, ANZAC Hwy, Esplanade, Wheatland St, Kuri Parade, Brandon Tce, The Cove and Return

Coffee at Glenelg

Return via Anzac Hwy

We should be back in time to see the ladies depart for Willunga hill. If anyone is interested in training for next Saturdays ride Old Willunga hill is now available on Zwift.
