KIT ORDERS UPDATE (EXTENDED CLOSE DATE) - CYCLE THE BEND

Merry Christmas All!!!

Now its time for less eating and more riding...

KIT ORDERS UPDATE

Kit orders have been coming along nicely, however many of you got caught in the same pre-Christmas craziness as me, and have had trouble getting in to try the sample kit on, or just get around to ordering.

Given this, we have extended the close date for orders, to be post TDU.

Orders will now close at 5.00pm on Monday 28 January 2019.

Order process remains as set out in the previous posts. If anyone wants to catch me during the holidays to try the kit on, give me a call or text on 0417 828 979 or message me via the BG Facebook group.

Just some tips in terms of sizing, as has been described, the kit sits between the ChampSys Club and Race cuts in terms of its form.

The nicks are firm, but compliant, and will probably match you CS size (or perhaps 1 size up). The jersey is moderately form fitting, but has excellent length, so there isn't a need to size up just to make sure it is long enough. Again, your CS size (or perhaps one size up) will be pretty close.

Check out the size chart below for reference.

CYCLE THE BEND

The Bend Motorsport Park is having a 'Cycle the Bend' track session this Friday, 28 December 2018, sign-on at 9.30am, session commencing 10.00am to 12.00pm.

It will be pretty hot, but I'm keen to get a look at the track before doing Revolve 24 raising money for JDRF in March.

I'm heading up, and have two seats and two spots on the bike rack for anyone who wishes to come. Call/text if you want to come with me.

You need to register here (costs $10.40):

The BG wish you and your families a Happy and Safe Festive season and all the very best for 2019.

BG Christmas & New Years Riding

All

Christmas and New Years eve fall on Mondays this year which has made the next two Sundays ride guides a bit fuzzy. Hence I thought I would get in early and get the next two Sunday rides posted as I know what I am like and will likely choose egg-nog (its like getting smashed on icecream) over updating the blog.

Sunday 23rd of December -Beach Ride Anzac Hwy - Outer Harbor

  • Meet in the City at 7:30 am

Sunday 30th of December -Beach Ride Hallett Cove

  • Meet in the City at 7:30 am
As of today you have 32 training days until the TDU ride. To inspire you to work off that Christmas cheer I have posted the final for 2018.

BG X KIT - ORDER DETAILS

Hi All

Massive Kudos goes to Steve Balmer and Gavin Hornibrook for their amazing work on the BG 10th Anniversary kit.

It's now ready to roll!!!

The kit is on sale as a jersey and knicks combination for $150.00.

This order is not coming from Champion System, so we are doing the order the old fashioned way, where you need to confirm your order, pay your money and we'll then pay Gavin who will manage the production of the order.

This kit is absolutely fantastic quality for the price, and purchasing it should be considered a one time only opportunity. Don't be missing out.

Orders close at 5.00 pm on Monday 7 January 2019.

So, here is how it works:

  1. Michael R has a large size jersey and knicks at his work (33 Carrington Street in the City) - call or text Michael on 0417 828 979 to arrange a time to drop in and try them on - then work our your sizing in reference to the large.
  2. Confirm your order quantity to Michael by email (call or text to get the address if you don't have it).
  3. Michael will provide details for payment (bank transfer) when you confirm your order quantity.
  4. Make payment by 5.00pm on Monday 7 January 2019.
  5. The final paid orders will be forwarded to Gavin on 8 January 2019 and he'll get them in production.
  6. Michael R will distribute the kit once it arrives, just like our CS orders.

We do have some volume requirements to get to this pricing, so it would be great if people could get their orders in ASAP so that we know the likely volumes. Who knows, if enough people order enough kit, Santa may even decide BG has been collectively nice.

And, before someone asks, here is the front and back of the kit on a mannequin so you can see the whole thing.

Sunday Ride - Macclesfield (not a TDU Reconnaissance)

This Sundays Ride was scheduled as a TDU Reconnaissance but given that

  1. The TDU goes up the expressway which means using the southern bike track. Not really the most fun to ride
  2. Follows Main South Road to Yankalilla which is not a great road for a small group
  3. The TDU ride itself if 160km and any exploratory route ends up way up there in terms of distance
the ride committee has decided it's a no go.

Hence we will do a alternative Hills Ride out to Macclesfield
  • Meet in the City at 7:30 am
  • Meet at the Toll Gate at 8:00 am
  • Meet at the Bollards at 8:30 am
Route Tollgate - Bollards - Stirling - Aldgate Valley Rd - Mylor - Echunga - Macclesfield

Sunday Ride - Meadows

Sundays Ride is the Meadows loop. I am not sure why something about tasty things at the bakery!

So please don't be put off and come out at least for the early stages of the loop if you feel your not up to the full journey.

We are doing the Meadows loop in the clockwise (Mt Lofty first) direction. This allows a selection of escape routes of varying degrees of distance and difficulty for those without kilometers in their legs. The anticlockwise direction doesn't work as well for escape routes.

The full loop is mapped here and I suggest if you haven't ridden it before to download the map to either your GPS or phone . The first part is easy to follow but there are a few roads less traveled on the southerly return.

https://www.strava.com/routes/15983215  94 km (from the city) 1338 m of ascent

Meeting Times

7:30 am in the City
8:00 am at the Tollgate (bottom of the freeway bike track)
8:30 am at the Bollards

It's good for you

Ride Report - Bring a Mate Sunday - Ride for Mim

We had a great day for Bring a Mate Sunday in tribute of Mim Pullinger. We raised $880 which Phil has asked be donated to the Rare Cancer Research Fund at the RAH. Many thanks to Frank Smith for suggesting the ride as a way of honoring Mim and supporting Phil, great work as always Frank.

Ride Report
Depending on who was counting and when they counted between 25 and 30 riders gathered at Hindmarsh Square. As far as the day went we couldn't have had better weather. Brian, Dave and Frank gave out the instructions without having to resort to a whiteboard. For a big group that hadn't ridden together the group was very cohesive and safe. Thanks to Ralph and others for group riding lessons. Thankfully Brian resisted the urge to create the mother of all pace lines. We got everyone out of the City and down to the Bay without incident and after trial and error found a pace that was comfortable.

We seemed to collect other groups as we rode along, either on the front as passing was deemed unwise, or people hooking on the back. This made a big group look even bigger especially when you looked back to see if everyone was on. We turned onto the Esplanade at West Beach when the first and only little drama of the day happened. A lady was reverse parking and decided she couldn't get in to the park. She then started moving forward without looking. Graham was on the front at this point. Thankfully multiple people yelled the warning and disaster was averted, however Graham polished her paintwork with his "good" leg.

I rolled off the front after a little way after this and made the "water bag and a cut lunch trip" to the back of the group. Every time I thought I reached the back there was a voice telling it wasn't the back yet and to keep going.

The first sprint at Bower Rd was lightly contested as people were a little unsure but I think a few people got a sniff because at the Outer Harbor sprint it was on like donkey kong. Sorry I didn't note any of the sprint winners. We stopped for some photos but not before some of our riders joined the wrong group hence not everyone is in the photos.

On the return journey it was agreed the pace would be sedate until we hit the lights on Military Rd. Everyone enjoyed the sedate pace and was chatting most of the way down the Esplande. However when we hit those lights, the pace went from sedate to whatever the opposite of sedate is. The group accelerated from a very comfortable 33 kph to a less comfortable 51 kph. The group itself didn't splinter it just spread out which was great to see. If the main group was doing 51 the sprint itself must have been north of 60. Lots of grinning riders at the regroup. The coffee shop was a tad overwhelmed but the coffees came out reasonable quickly. A few words were said and I think it more than safe to say everyone enjoyed the day. In terms of average pace we were not that much slower than a normal ride. Its just with such a large group the effort required at the back was so much less.

On the way home the Greenhill Rd return group decided to call a second coffee stop at The Parade. Moving up to turn right onto The Parade, the lights changed and Brian and Mike not taking any risk pulled up sharply leaving their front wheels inside the pedestrian crossing. A couple of pedestrians walked past and nodded as you would expect. However a tall skinny woman walked up and started to complain loudly. I quote "I have just had a nice meal, I shouldn't have to walk around you. Your spoiling my day, It is completely ridiculous that I should have to walk around you" She demanded they move back ignoring the fact that there was 3 other riders and a car there, they were stationary, not obstructing the crossing and that she only had to move 30 cm and would still be well inside the crossing.  With remarkable restraint they wished her a nice day. That just set her off even more. Better to be the "Tut-Tut-ee" than the "Tut-Tut-er" in my book. The BG's wish her good mental health.

Men Down

All

Some bad News we have two men down

Jacob
As I reported last post Jacob has had a crash.

John tells me that Jacob has broken his collar bone having catapulted over his handlebars. Jacob is in a lot of pain but at least he will get a couple of weeks off school. He’s pretty fed up about having to miss a few big mountain bike races which were on his radar. Get well soon Jacob.

Warwick
Warwick had a bad fall while riding in France on holiday. I know he woke up in hospital and in his words "has a few broken bits which are still healing". I am sure we will get a full download when we see him next. Get Well soon Warwick.

Sunday Ride - Bring a Mate Sunday

Bring a Mate Sunday
As you know this is a sad time for Phil and family with the loss of Mim to cancer. The Beach Ride on Sunday the 21st of October will be Bring a Mate Sunday in support of the Pullinger Family.

Please bring along a mate for a social ride and we will pass the hat around at coffee for a folding money donation.

Meet: Hindmarsh Square in the City (opposite Cafe Amore)
When: 7:30 am
Route: Anzac Highway - Glenelg - Outer Harbor - Glenelg
Coffee: Veloce Paninoteca Glenelg (to be confirmed on the morning)
Return: at leisure

There are plenty of turn around points on that route that allow a regroup at Glenelg. Coffee stop will be flexible depending upon numbers.

A thank you to the BG's

Hi BG's,

It was in early 2017 that I first started to bring my 13 y.o. son Jacob, out to ride with the BGs. In those first few rides he struggled to keep up and we had to take a few shortcuts but he was welcomed by all. Now, almost two years later he’s a vastly improved cyclist from a physical and technical perspective and the Sunday morning BGs ride has been an important part of his training in preparation for state and national junior cycling championships.

Recently he competed in the National Junior Road Cycling Championships in Bunbury, WA. I’m really proud of the way he prepared for the Championships and his efforts in the Road and Criterium races. He was little disappointed not to have stayed with the lead bunch in the road race but happy with his average speed and effort. (Note that his average heart rate in the road race was 193 b.p.m.).

Aside from the racing, Jacob has always enjoyed the BG ride experience. No matter the weather, he independently gets up at 6:00am each Sunday morning to get ready. Sometimes I think he’s in it just so that he can indulge in his love for chocolate, cream and cake at the morning coffee break but I know it’s more than that. It’s an opportunity for him to regularly share a common sporting interest with a great group of cyclists and friends. A big thank you to you all for your ongoing support and interest.

Regards

John

A Jacob update
For those that follow Strava you would have already seen that Jacob has had a stack (details unknown) and fractured his clavicle. The BG's wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Get well soon Jacob.

BG News - Well Done Jacob Bos

All
Jacob Bos rode in the Junior Road Nationals road race in Bunbury,  Western Australia at the weekend.

It was a lumpy course and the pace was ballistic with an average speed of 34.6 km/h. Jacob managed a creditable 30th place out of 60 just failing to make the break on the last climb despite putting in an amazing effort. His time was 1:06:22.383 over 39 km

On Sunday Jacob entered the criterium and has just made the final, averaging 37 km/h in qualifying in a time of 20:28:704. A very proud father John says that Jacob was stuffed but looking forward to the final.
PP

Update
I have checked the results of the criterium final this afternoon and Jacob registered a DNF in what looked from the results like a blindingly fast final. Well done making the final.

Well Done! Jacob

Sunday Ride - Roads Less Traveled

This Sunday is the Roads less traveled ride. This one snuck up on me so I didnt have a chance to canvas route options. So I propose we head to Cudlee Creek and do some of the roads less traveled from there. This will give those returning to the Hills a chance to come out.

  • Meet in the City at 8:00 am, or
  • At the Tower Hotel carpark at 8:30 am

PS: Good luck to the BG's who are leaving the wheels behind this Sunday and running to Glenelg.

Please Help Support the Pullinger Family

In case you are not aware, Mim Pullinger, Phil’s wife, is currently receiving palliative care for Cancer. Phil's work colleagues have organised a Quiz night to help support the family. Details below.

The Bastardi Gruppetto is on TABLE 11 - BG Cycling Club please go to www.trybooking.com/421351 to book.

If there is no more space on Table 11 please start another table and let me know. The same link can be used to make a donation if you can’t attend

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mim and Phil have a 19 year old daughter (university) and a 17 year old son (Year 11).
Their family in Australia is mostly their network of friends and work colleagues.

We are running a fundraising quiz night on Saturday 6 October 2018 to provide some financial and general support for the Pullinger family during this awful time for them.

Money raised will go to Phil to ease the financial pressure of the situation and assist them in the near future.

PLEASE BOOK OR JOIN A TABLE - $20 per ticket, tables of 10.
Encourage non-police family and friends to join in.  All welcome.
There are 25 tables available. Help us sell out this event.

Special thanks to the Woodville West Torrens Football Club (thru President Kurt Slaven) for sponsoring the event venue, the football club function centre.

Thank you to many of you who have donated raffle prizes and silent auction items.  If anyone has anything they would like to donate, please provide to me or Erin.  Even small items are useful to bundle together as prizes or sale items.

Feel free to forward this on to anyone else.

Sunday Ride - No Excuses - Fathers Day

This Sundays ride is the No Excuses ride Outer Harbor Via Port Road. We had great numbers last Sunday so looking forward to the warmer weather getting people out.

Meet in the City at 8:00 am

Last week was the last ride on the Winter Schedule and we return to the usual Beach/Hills alternation from this week. We have made a couple of changes to the Ride Guide to make the return to the hills more approachable.

  • the 9th of September will swap from Cudlee Creek/Birdwood  to Hahndorf in order to satisfy the Strudel cravings
  • the Meadows Loop is pushed back  2 weeks to the 28th of October
  • The TDU reconnaissance will need to be discussed as the actual route is not pleasant for a small group as it travels along Main South Rd
Yeah I know Fathers day is kinda of a excuse, Sorry for not updating the Blog I have been offline.

Sunday Ride - Anything can Happen

This Sunday was meant to mark the end of the Winter Ride schedule with us heading back into the Hills to Hahndorf. However as we slogged it back to Glenelg from Outer Harbor into the wind/gale on Sunday it was mentioned that this was perhaps the outcome of ride planning done in the comfort of a warm day in March and a glass of chilled Riesling. The consensus was we need to ease back into Hills and give people who havent ridden through winter a chance to start coming out again.

Hence I will take a cue from Canberra and perform a back-flip. This Sunday's Ride will be a Anything can Happen ride.

Meet in the City at 8:00 am

If the Weather is as good as the forecast we may include an optional Hill at the end.

The Vuelta Espana begins the weekend. Stage 9 looks interesting

This is a Bicycle, we get up on Sunday mornings and ride it with the BG's

This was a Bicycle a few years ago, Graham has been riding one in Queensland

This is also a Bicycle...Try riding one with the BG's, we dare you, we double dare you

Sunday Ride - Outer Harbor via Anzac Highway

Sundays Ride is Outer Harbor via Anzac Highway

Meet in the City at 8:00 am

There will also be a extraordinary meeting of the beach ride coffee sub-committee to decide on the coffee and return destination. We seem to have bad luck with our choice of cafe's as they keep shutting.

Some suggestions that have been for our new beach destination.

  1. 303 By the Sea - Very good choice for groups of < 6 riders
  2. Cafe Salsa - certainly has the room but not one is sure if they do coffee and cake. Well they definitely do coffee
  3. West Beach SLSC - No one has been there so may require reconnaissance
  4.  Malabo, Swedish Tarts or another one on Henley Square
  5. Cibo at Glenelg
  6. One of the three Cafe's on the Broadway at Glenelg. Pirate something, Organic Cafe and that Bradway Kios
Or we start our own Bastardi Cafe. The menu will have to include the 3 special meal deals. Brutto bastardo (Ugly Bastardi), Duro bastardo (Hard Bastardi), Povero bastardo (Poor Bastardi).
No they weren't Italian brothers who played on back line for Collingwood in the 70's

Tour de France
It has been a fantastic tour and by this Sunday we will know how its all ending. One things for sure there has been a lot of trouble keeping rubber side down and Philippe Gilbert ended up down a "slight ravine".

Sunday Ride - Hallett Cove

10th Anniversary Ride Report

The 10th Anniversary ride on Sunday was a huge success. We have 18 riders gather in the city in the morning to be greeted by David Bills. Billsy wasn't riding as he had a clash and  that poor Giant of his is apparently in multiple pieces. We think he he should do the right thing, buy a pistol and put it out of its misery. Lots of people we hadn't seen in while and it was a great turn out for a fine winters day.

After lots of catching up I had to channel Brian for first time that day and get the ladies to stop gas bagging and start riding. You think we hadn't ridden together in while.

We had a good run down to the beach and then turned north and the wind while it didn't seem much mad it a bit of slog. The large group riding skills certainly aren't as slick as they used to be. We were a bit ragged to say the least. At Outer Harbor I instructed the crew to take a Brian lecture on pulsing, holding the wheel and pace setting as read. The one thing no one had forgotten was the location of the sprint points with all the sprints hotly contested.

We returned to Glenelg for coffee only to discover that the coffee shop that took my booking, name and number had gone out of business in the two weeks since I had booked. Yep out usual  luck in booking stuff has held. No wonder we have never managed a club trip. We had 18 riders plus Alf, Michael Richardson, Kate and Oscar. Thankfully Cafe Esca up the pier could accommodate us so crisis averted.

Steve Balmer showed us the 10 year anniversary jersey and it looks great. I will publish the picture once I the tweaking is finished.

It was suggested by Frank that we schedule another 10 year Anniversary in the warmer weather as a number of riders expressed disappointment and the cold would have put a few people off. I was thinking to try around the time of the first hills ride and the delivery of the 10 year jersey.

It was a fantastic day so a great thank you to everyone who attended.

Sunday Ride - BG 10 Year Anniversary

All

This Sundays ride is the Bastardi (Grassi) Gruppetto  10 year anniversary ride. Please invite anyone who has ridden with us in the past to come along and celebrate.

When: Sunday July 15th. Meet at Hindmarsh Square in the city at 8:00am

This will be the No Excuses ride for this month

The Ride: We will reprise the Original BG ride which was City to the Beach via Anzac Hwy, turn at Bower Road. As the currently riding BG's will find that a little short, the ride will be
  • Anzac Highway to Outer Harbor, returning to Glenelg for Coffee
I haven't ridden in years
There are multiple bail out points for people who haven't ridden in a while on this route. e.g. Bower Road where we originally turned. We will all aim to return to Glenelg for Brunch/Extended Coffee at around 10:30 am

Non Riders
If your calves are really soft and you don't plan to ride. Meet up with crew for Extended Coffee at 10:30 am

Brunch/Extended Coffee:  Will be at  Veloce Paninoteca on the Glenelg Marina. http://www.velocepaninoteca.com/   I am not sure Bastardi's do brunch. In any case the plan is to have a longer coffee stop than normal, have a chat and order something more substantial than a cannoli.
